Very interesting...for the life of me I don't know what this coupling means. In fact, before registering on this message board, I'd never come across it before. Isn't there supposed to be a verb in the middle?

I'd be very grateful if somebody could enlighten me on this point. Then I could explain it all to the au pair (preferably in the bedroom when the wife's out at Tesco).

I am disappointed that I have not received enlightenment on this most pressing issue.

Unfortunately I am beginning to get the feeling that many users of this curious construction are the ones who are hopelessly confused.

The correct coupling is 'would have.' Even my au pair could tell you that.

Not quite! It comes from the old english "woudde ovve" or "woodderoff" or in the Leicester dialect "gerroff yer daft twat".
