Was he really that bad?

He had a leaky defence with no confidence in front of him following the change in law interpretation and a midfield lost without Kanté.

Thanks for your efforts Ron-Robert. Sadly it just wasn't to be.

I guess Jakupovic will be on his way now...

I still think Slimani is a very good goalscorer, though I expect him to be sold.

Good luck to Ron-Robert (did we ever find out why he's called that?), always seemed a symptom not the cause of our direness in the league, but there we go. Wish I was certain that we won't repeat the week in June 2016 in which we signed him and Hernandez having shipped Kramaric off to Germany - we seem to have an endemic problem doing the change management thing bringing players in from other leagues (except Ligue 1 apparently).

Seems strange doesn't it, just how bad our recruitment was last summer having got it so right before that?

Was it the timing of Walsh's departure? We were under the impression most of those signings had been on the radar for a while (Musa we went in for in the Jan window before). Did we just sign players up that Walsh had previously looked at but hadn't actually recommended? Did he know he was leaving and just suggested some players he wouldn't have actually signed? Did they just ignore his suggestions and go with something else when we had no scouting in place? Or, as has been suggested before, is it that Walsh helped the players he found bed in and bring them into the team ethos? Would those signings have worked out differently if he'd stayed?

I think it's actually a bit of a shame to see the whole lot leave straight away - think some of them had potential and didn't get a run in the side, not helped by the fact that the rest of the squad underperformed too.

Think we've done well to get £4m for Zieler though. Think he was too far lightweight.

Um, only 2 from last year have gone, we don't know who's on the way out, the remainder could still be here this time next year.

IMO losing Walsh was the biggest factor of last seasons rubbish recruitment. I think by losing him Ranieri had the biggest say in recruitment leading to him to revert to players he's used in the past (Mendy) or influenced by agents (Kapustka)

I believe Mendy was a Ranieri signing and won't have come if Walsh was here. (maybe part of the rumored falling out between the two)
Slimani was a panic buy because we'd not strengthen the team enough.
Kapustka was a agent/Ranieri buy.

Musa we had scouted before, but for whatever reason it did work out last season.

Really poor recruitment last summer... Really, really poor.

Was it the recruitment that was poor? Or was it the failure to integrate them into the 'band of brothers' that wasted all that money?

Mendy was on the radar before Ranieri was appointed. If I remember correctly he was being mentioned before Pearson was sacked and at one point was preferred over Kante.

Both.

Yeah. Our head editor at our German property is a Stuttgart fan and was quite giddy about the signing.

I did try to warn him....
