Abysmal. 400 was the minimum. The bowlers will have to bail them out, which is a tough ask on that pitch.

253 all out....

1-1 sidebottom strikes!

24-1 off for a dump

93-1

Good comeback by England

England 253
N Zealand 168

England 91 for 2

England lead by 176. If they can bat nearly all of the 3rd day then they should win.

right score at the right time for strauss, would have been interesting to see if he was picked for the return tests in may without this score.

Problem is next 3 tests are against a weaker NZ side at home. Bags of runs for all the top 6, and we will be nowhere nearer knowing which of them can still hack it at the very top level.

Yeh kinda my point. There was a chance Strauss would be dropped if he hadnt performed in this test and certainly the follwing ones at home against nz but this score must have helped.

Strauss has scored runs against good opposition, but like most players his career as had a lull. When the confidence goes then it all becomes a real struggle. Lets hope this knock gets him up and running again.
The scrutiny should now be on Michael Vaughan who as once again struggled with the bat this series.

Hes there for his captainship rather than his batting, I would drop down the order though.

Vaughan was a top class batsman in his earlier test career, but probaly through injuries as struggled somewhat since. His captaincy is not in doubt, but England really could do with his form picking up a bit.
