This probably sounds like s stupid question to you geeks, but bearing in mind I am of an older generation....

I currently have a mobile plan that gives me 1GB of data per month over a 3G network and I use around 750MB per month at most.

If I switch to a 4G contract which also gives me 1GB of data per month, assuming my data habits remained the same would I actually use more of my allowance on a 4G network than on a 3G one? In other words, is there a hidden cost in terms of bandwidth usage etc when on 4G over and above what 3G requirements are?

Thanks.

Data is data. If your habits remain the same, you will use the same and won't go over. It's the same now, if you are in a non-3G area it doesn't come out of a different allowance.

Will you watch more inappropriate videos if they're downloading faster?

I realise that, but with it being much faster wasn't sure if more of the allowance was used as a result.

Like I said, probably sounded a stupid question......... :icon_bigg

If you go to the shops to buy a bag of chips, you won't end up with more chips because you went by car instead of walking there

I'm glad you're around to ask the questions I daren't

What's the point in cars though? Why would anyone want something faster?...

As soon as people see the extra cost involved in using them, they'll just say "**** that, what's the point? My legs are fine, I'll just use them"

Couldn't you come up with a realistic analogy? What sort of nutter would walk to the chippy.

I have to pass the chippy on my way to the nearest place I can park my car.

What about if the chippy delivers? I'm not wasting my time going to the chippy if they can come to me. Is that like 5G?

You'll use slightly more just due to the fact that in the (e.g.) ten minutes you are browsing, you'll hit more pages. If you just open one page and read it for the entire ten minutes, you'll use the same but that isn't typical usage. Losing that five second gap for page loading each time you hit a new page means that if you visit twelve pages, you'll acquire a minute extra browsing and in that minute you'll visit extra pages. Extra pages = extra usage. You say you use about 750MB out of your Gig so you should be fine so long as you don't change your browsing habits.

Thanks Joe_Fox. A sensible post from an unexpected source :icon_wink

But what about if I want a half and half pizza with additional toppings on one side?
