Email from the year 2002

just checked my email and i have had an email sent to me which was apparently sent Tues 28 May 2002

i deleted it without reading it as i knew it was spam, but had it really taken over 4 years to get to me or can these spammers change the dates?

They can forge the dates, I get some from next month every now and again, never contain any winning bet tips though or lottery numbers

why would they want to, id more likely to open 'spam' from todays date than tommorrw, next week or 4 years ago

Sending an email with a future date on it is done because it means the email will stay at the top of your list of emails for longer (assuming you have them sorted in date order). That is unless you delete it as soon as you see it.

People are probably more likely to read something that catches their notice, like having the wrong date on it.
