It's going to be a very strange next few weeks as football fan. In a period where there's normally a busy fixture list of domestic and European football there is instead a winter World Cup in an absurd, tiny, woman-hating, gay-hating slave state.
I'm planning to not watch any matches but I'll still scan the back pages of the newspaper (let's be realistic) and if England do really well, it will be a weird feeling.
I can see a future where the World Cup becomes so ridiculous (48 teams, not given to countries for football reasons) I just no longer regard it as the World Cup all at, a bit like how The Simpsons is still going today but it's now viewed as a 'Zombie Simpsons' rather than anything to do with the excellent cartoon in the 1990s.

Guy I know that is a fanatical England fan that hasn't missed an England away game in 20 years isn't going to Qatar its part ethical and part financial

Oh yeah I know. I am citing that development as an example of it becoming ridiculous. I think in future people will start to treat the group matches like an extension of World Cup qualifiers and not even watch them. It's not really the World Cup 'finals' when there are 48 teams.

In fairness, the host for World Cup 2026 is fair and reasonable. Don't spend the time I just did looking at World Cup 2030 though, it's likely to be a right mess

I think they should just give it to Germany forever - famously (a)well organised and (b)not corrupt, and with (c)the football culture and infrastructure that can support a World Cup of as many nations as you like
