Is it possible to password protect a folder on your computer?

I have written a lot of procedures for work and some joker keeps editing them. I have written them in word format but I have now converted them all to pdf and secure the document by password. However I need to keep the original word documents so that i can edit them as and when I need to.

There are a number of other documents which need to be on the shared server but are not for everyone.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have figured it out, you can not protect the folder but you can password protect the file.

is there no way at all of password protecting a folder?

i have one that i reall don't want anyone getting into, the only way i've got round it is by hiding them at the minute but doubt that is very secure.

it's not porn. before anyone asks, it's just very private

If you log on to your computer with a username and password, it would be possible for you to make a folder private so that other users (logged on with their username and password) couldn't see the contents.

compress/zip the folder & you can add a password to unzip it

but what if they are on my log in?

Why would anybody else be on yout log-in?

The method would only work as I described.

i might leave my laptop signed in or other users with the same privileges could change my account type/remove password

the zip idea seems to be a good one.

Here you go Mitcho, works in microsoft word and you can do just a document if you want

Require a password to open a document

When you create a password, write it down and keep it in a secure place. If you lose the password, you cannot open or gain access to the password-protected document. Learn about using passwords.
 1.
Open the document.

On the File menu, click Save As.

On the Tools menu in the Save As dialog box, click General Options.

In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.

In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK.
 2. Click Save
