To answer your question: from what i've been taught- Diwali was about Ramas return after he faught evil, the locals then burnt candles on his return; hence the lights.

Don't be fooled in thinking Hindus believe Gods came onto this earth. No person can have a monkey head or Elephant head. Its all based on myths and beliefs. Its what you want to believe. Whether god is real or not Hinduism is IMO the greatest religion on earth; they don't say Jesus, Allah etc were false lets bomb anyone who thinks against us; they are calling for Unity.

There are a few meanings to what Diwali means. I'd rather think it was a day to celebrate the great religion, bring unity between all religions and beliefs and go forward in peace and harmony. Light a candle
