bearing in mind that i know nothing about computer stuff.

i have disc space on my PC so i compressed files which did nothing!! so i went on add/remove programmes where i found out i have Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 (637mb) and Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 (456mb). Both these files are apparently used frequently.

Do i need them both?which one can i delete?

also will fragmenting the c drive help?

Uninstall one of the versions of Office, and if you find you need something it's easy enough to reinstall it. I think the main difference in the professional version is that it has Access - and maybe Outlook (not outlook express, which is part of windows)

Defragmenting your drive won't give you more space.

Have you emptied your recycle bin?

Also windows leaves lots of temporary files, which can usually be safely deleted - you can download programs that will find and delete these safely.

Defragmentating could speed your pc up, but wont increase disk space.

It reorganises the disk so that all of the pieces of each file are close together.

If you have 'lost' the discs for both then keep the professional edition, then you can use access. ;)

download & install this Scarby, crap cleaner
it will clear out loads of junk & will have your PC running better also
