Smith – 3. Ave 26.56, high score 70, 4 half centuries. In four day cricket had one good innings every four or five, followed by 3 single figure scores. Established as a one day player. In a good team would be occasional cover. For us, one of the first names on the sheet.
O’Brien – 2. Ave 28.9, high score 67, 5 half centuries. Our marquee signing, ok as a wicket keeper, ok as a late middle order batsman. Not an opener.
Thornley – 0. Ave 17.92, high score 52, 1 half century. Started as an opener, dropped after several single figure scores. Contributed nothing as far as I can tell.
Eckersley – 8. Ave 57.9, high score 147, 4 centuries, 4 half centuries. Player of the year by a country mile.
Sarwan – 0. Ave 36.43, high score 79, 2 half centuries. Baffling appointment as captain when he was away for most of the year, and equally baffling performances as captain, continually inserting the opposition on flat wickets against our powder puff attack. Welcome back if he actually plays, but if the WI have a tour or the IPL come calling then someone else please.
Burns – 0. Ave 30.57, high score 77, 1 half century. The overseas player needs to be the fulcrum of the side. We should have realised really, if he couldn’t even get in the Australia A side in the current era, he’s probably not going to be our Simon Katich.
Cobb – 3. Ave 14.62, high score 46. 3 marks for his one day performances. A disaster in the county championship where he started as vice captain, and ended up as number 7. Will probably leave.
Thakor – 5. Ave 31.94, high score 114, 1 century, 4 half centuries. Started well, fell away, unsurprisingly as a young player in a failing team
Boyce – 0. Ave 31.32, high score 135. 2 centuries, 7 fifties. 0 might be harsh, but he’s a senior player, vice captain who has played 162 first class innings and compiled a grand total of 6 centuries in that time. Must now be time to move on.
Bowlers
Freckingham – 6. Ave 42.4, 1 five wicket innings. Only vague competitor with Eckersley for player of the year. Probably thought he might get a game or two at the end of the season; has ended playing all of the season. Should be back up rather than opening bowler.
Buck – 0. Ave 50.0, 0 five wicket innings. Should be leading the attack and pushing to play in the top division. Has taken a grand total of 5 wickets in the county championship this season.
Williams – 0. Ave 54.5, 0 five wicket innings. We really needed a permanently injured seam bowler. Has taken 8 championship wickets.
Ireland – 0. Ave 96, 0 five wicket innings. Ditto. 2 wickets all season.
Hoggard – 2. Ave 29.56, 1 five wicket innings. Actually bowled alright when he wasn’t cooking, dancing and lying on the treatment table. His departure will free up money for someone who might actually play I guess.
Wyatt – 5. Ave 41.7, 0 five wicket innings. Did OK, didn’t get injured that often.
Naik – 4. Ave 40.19, 1 five wicket innings. Did OK. Did get injured.
Sykes – 2. Ave 58.5, 0 five wicket innings. Don’t think Naik has to worry too hard about getting his place back.
Coaching staff – 0. Our strategy is to bring through young players and get them to fulfil their potential. The only players close to doing this are Eckersley and Freckingham. The symbols of their failure are Cobb, Buck and Smith, ex England U-19 players who should be challenging to play for Nottinghamshire by now; they’re more likely to end up playing for Shropshire. Thakor needs to think carefully about his future lest he goes the same way. I’m sure Whitticase, Smith and the rest are doing their best, but we need coaches of the stature of Boon and Whittaker, and we clearly don’t have it.
Figures are for the County Championship only. Don't hold with this one day stuff.
What a season.
