We will have a few guys at the club training without a squad number next year and picking up a hefty salary for doing very little, we just need to suck that up for a couple of years until we can get rid without it costing as much as a new player or three.
...and after sucking it up for a couple of years, this group of 'redundants' will be replaced by a new and similar group who have reached the end of their usefulness or not reached their anticipated potential.

We've had such a list of 'surplus to requirements' ... like forever. Four years of close seasons during our current Prem stay shows consistently that three will leave on permanent deals to other clubs on receipt or payment, and a similar number departing on season loans. I confidently expect a similar outcome in the coming month.

The only thing more predictable than this is that various TBers will continue to solemnly post their lists of players to move out/get rid of/euthanase like it's the proverbial "proposition from Wittgenstein"

I almost added something similar to my earlier post; I'm glad I didn't because you've expressed it with greater elegance than I could ever have done.

Yep, almost as predictable as various TBers having a pop at various other TBers ;)

We're all nobbers really. None of us knows anything, about football nor Wittgenstein. As long as you're aware that that's part of the language game then all's OK.

So, yesterday we started with Ward, Daley-Campbell, Morgan, Maguire, Elder. Amartey, King, Wright, Muskwe, Thomas and Iheanacho.

We played the second half with ten changes - Justin, Evans, Soyuncu, Fuchs, Mendy, Tielemans, Ndukwu, Ricardo, Albrighton, Vardy.

We then added Fitzhugh later on as well. So that's 22 players used.

We have Perez, Kapustka, Leshabela and James injured (yes folks, he's injured again). That's 26.

We also have Schmeichel, Jakupovic, Benkovic, Chilwell, Ndidi, Silva, Maddison, Barnes, Choudhury, Slimani, Pascanu, Knight, Johnson, Moore, Hughes, Uche, Iverson, Johansson, Ghezzal, Diabate. That's us up to 46.

I've also heard mention of the following being part of first team or U23 games so far: Pennant, Leathers, Hirst, Reghba, Loft, Eppiah, Tavares, L Thomas, Arlott-John, Russ, Elewa-Ikpakwu, Kranthove, Ughelumba; Tee, Williams, Stolarczyk, Ewing, Loughlan, Bolkiah. That's 65.

There is also speculation that we've signed Nicell from Leeds, Mussa from Walsall and Lovatt from Hastings, all of whom have played for the U23s in pre-season. So we could be up to 68.

And we're still looking to sign more.

I hope they're on track with the new training ground as we've no room for this lot at Belvoir Drive.

George Thomas and Callum Elder will either be sold or loaned out, I'd expect at least 2 of Knight, Johnson, Hughes and Pascanu to go on loan, how old is Callum Wright? most of the lads that have played some part in the first team this season from the U23s need to be out on loan playing football, we really haven't been good enough at sorting that out over the last few years, if you look at most prem sides U23s its full of 17-18 year olds with rehabbing first teamers mixed in as players older than that are either with the first team or on loan.

That's the approach we need to be taking not chasing a PL2 title

On the basis that we need two players for each position as the main structure for our first team squad, I have the following 20 as nailed on to be named in the 25:

Schmeichel / Ward /Ricardo / Amartey / Evans / Soyuncu / Morgan / Benkovic / Chilwell / Fuchs / Ndidi / Choudhury / Tielemans / Albrighton / Maddison / Barnes / Perez / Gray / Vardy / Iheanacho

I'm not including Maguire as I still think he's more likely to go than stay. If he does go, it appears that the plan is to replace him anyway. In addition, we seem likely to sign another central midfielder and another wide player before deadline day. So, that takes us up to 23 out of 25.

We then have 17 more over 21 year old players that would need to be registered to play. These are:

Jakupovic / Iverson / Knight / Moore / Hughes / Elder / Mendy / King / James / Silva / Thomas / Kapustka / Diabate / Ghezzal / Slimani / Uche / Loft

We'll obviously be loaning quite a lot of these out. Indeed, 10 of the 17 were out on loan last season. The rest we've got to sell or they'll be hangers on without a place in the squad and doing nothing except getting in the way of younger players.

There is an argument for a third keeper and retaining one other. It's harsh on someone like Mendy but being in the last year of his contract and third choice as holding midfielder, what's the point in him being there? If we can sell him, we obviously should. If not, maybe he takes the final place.

There are then a lot of U21 players such as Justin and Johnson and Leshabala and Johannson and Pascanu that we don't want to block from the odd game or place on the bench. The above 17 need clearing out to enable this. Indeed, the U23 squad is also very bloated which means we'll want to loan out quite a few of them too. It's not beyond possibility that we hit over 20 loans out this season.

We've got the added OHL issue too. We tend to loan them a few each season and it's really not worked out for either party so far. So we need to send them players that are going to benefit from it and who will contribute towards getting them into the top Belguim division to make our link up more beneficial.

We've employed our former player Guy Branston to the role of 'Loans Manager'. I think he's going to be extremely busy over the next couple of weeks.

Rodgers spoke after the game last night and seemed to infer that the squad will be split for the two friendlies on Saturday.

Those going to Stoke will be in his squad this season and those going to Rotherham will be kids/surplus to requirements.

He'll then focus his preparations for the season on the 'Stoke group' going forward.

He wants lots of midfielders in his squad but a lean group in terms of numbers as we're not in Europe. He was clear that he still wants more new players if the club can get them.

Also said Ndidi will be available for the Wolves game but won't play any preseason matches.
