OK, some of them may be pigs on wheels but there's more to roller derby than that - there's the really fit ones wearing skimpy shorts and stockings and shit. I believe there's more to it than them going on to get sweaty and fight with each other.

I'm a fan.

Watched the DRR over at Newark Showground a couple of weeks ago - it was really good fun. Genuinely.

But keep well clear of all the dirty old men in raincoats who must be attracted!

Shame on you Spion.
I am sure Mawsley has an impeccable character and is not even a dirty young man.

The Dolly Rockit Rollers are based in Leicester and are currently seeking referees - so grab a set of skates, a funny hat and a bizarre nickname and get on down there...

This pic was taken at the Newark showground and shows what you would look like as a ref. One of these is my son. As he puts it "you get to whistle at girls without being politically incorrect"

He looks like he is taking it seriously. Bet those knee pads come in useful as well.

I take it the showers are separate

It's odd how these things go in cycles. I remember Roller Derby as one of those odd sports that used from time to time to make up the Saturday afternoon TV schedules 50 or so years ago - like 10 pin bowling, Snooker plus, driving old cars up muddy slopes, freestyle wrestling and more that I've mercifully forgotten. At that time it was essentially a male sport, but with a girl's race tacked on. And, as far as I know, exclusively American. Then it seemed to disappear, only to re-emerge a few years back as an exclusively "girls in skimpy kit" sport.

Two of my friends went along to play last weekend - one now has no knees and the other is carping about her elbows.

Big event on at Earls Court this weekend. One of the Junior Gits in attendance. I anticipate an unscheduled influx of damaged women.
