Steven, you really should get out more....

lol    You are absolutely right. Seriously that is just the way my brain thinks. :p :? :?

Standard deviation might be an option but then it becomes, as Mr Elsby says, a science. The reason for any opinion reliant statistic is discussion. I ask you to think of such charts as the Q Music top 100 albums, or, more recently mentioned, the VH2 top 500 indie records. These are just opinions of a few people whose views are deemed to be representative of the population as a whole. They are not exact.

The only statistics that are exact are things like corners won, fouls conceded, (are more importantly golas scored), just as records sold, weeks ar number one, etc.

Sheffield Fox, I can understand why you wish to standardise the ratings but at the same time think it's a fruitless exercise. It's like asking every driver in the UK to drive at or below the speed limit - it'll never happen.

Also, if your ratings scale is 1 to 10 then the median mark AND the mean mark (also known as the average mark) would be 5.5, not 6 as you suggested. I find it odd that you can ask for standardised ratings but then suggest a marking scale that is flawed.

It's all about what you see, and what you feel, and no standardised rating system is going to compensate for that

I see stars and pink elephants and scan the crowd for the largest breasts and rate them accordingly, Steven marks them according to how they would look in a dress, Rovrum marks them according to how accommodating their lips are, MK according to how many times they have been up Mrs MK, the rest rate them on their own personal preferences

It's more interesting to see the variance, to be honest - and then argue about it afterwards

Fair enough I take all your points and I'm not trying to completely standardise the ratings, I'm trying to give an average guideline for people who are unsure on how to vote because there has been some questioning. I probably did title the thread wrong, it should have been guidelines for ratings, not rules for ratings.

However, what I will not do is to add ridiculous ratings where everyone in the team is given a 1 because it was a poor team performance because then the ratings are a completely fruitless and I'm sure everyone can understand this.

Isn't this a bit patronising? Surely we all have the nous to know how to rate players? We've all read 'Shoot' haven't we?

Firstly, sorry if I am being patronising as I don't intend to be at all.

Joe and everyone, please listen to what I am saying, I am just trying to help here, to provide a guideline as there has been debate on this board and 'another' board since I started this on how to vote. I'm not trying to change the way people vote, I'm really only trying to help, not cause this much controversy, but it seems as its probably for the best that this thread gets deleted.

Don't take too much to heart Sheffield, you do a fine job.Very useful for us who can't get to the matches.

I agree 100% with that. :p

Sheffield, excelent idea, you must recieve some silly assesments and there needs to be some guidlines. Dont let the discusions worry you.
and keep up the good work. We all appreciate the work you put into this.

PS: have you concidered a 'Most inconsistant player award" assesed on the range.

Also have you concidered a gauge R&R. I know its not the right application but it could be intereasting.

What do you mean by a gauge R&R?!?

Yeah, a rock and roll rating would be great, best air guitar and all that.

A gauge R&R measures is a statistical method to measure the Repeatability and Reproducability of a measuring system and we are currently measuring the players.

It gives a confidence rating for how much of the variation is attributed to the measured item (players) and how much of the variation can be attributed to the measuring method (Us the fans)

You can then be (say) 70% confident that the variation in results, is down to the marker (us) or visa versa.

It aint designed to measure people cos we are too subjective, but it might have shown some intereasting results. Its years since I used it and I cant remember how to.

Was that system devised while fornicating with a Kalashvikov and a school ruler? And is that explain why we now have so many Kash Chooer's in society?.
