Would love him to stay but if he goes then any potential suitors will have to make sure to cough up the asking price. I'd tell Roma to piss off as a matter of principal for their quite public, arrogant moaning approach to the whole saga last summer. Looking at some of the fees players are going for in the last year or two Mahrez is well worth £50m, we should be looking for that at minimum and if we can - bringing in Ben Arfa as a replacement could be an acceptable alternative.

If Van Dijk is worth £75m after refusing to play most of the time and then being distinctly average when he does, Mahrez must be worth as much, if not more than that.

January price has got to be at least £75m given how well he is playing at the moment.

Oh, and best player by a country mile to pull on the City shirt in my lifetime (30+ years).

Won't go now, but maybe in the summer unless something Ranieri-like happens between now and the end of the season

The final transfer fee is completely irrelevant - whatever figure we finally accept won't be anywhere near enough to secure a comparable replacement (or replacements)

Coutinho to Barca for something like £140m.
Mahrez to Liverpool for something like £60m.
Liverpool sell their best player but bring in two players in exchange who aren’t cup tied in Europe.

That’s my baseless speculation.

Fair point.

Never be embarrassed by baseless speculation, this place is teeming with it.

So Liverpool have £140 million rattling around in their pockets and we only ask for £60 million for little Riyad. Behave!

They’ve just spent £75m on Van Dyke. That would leave them £65m of the Coutinho money.

Southampton’s asking price in the summer was reportedly more than £60m, so they paid a bit more. Our asking price in the summer for Mahrez was reportedly £50m, so I added on a bit.

I didn’t say that’s what we would ask for, just that’s what I could see happening.

Don’t worry, Micky. As I said, it’s baseless speculation on my part. No need to take it too seriously.

Should maybe add that Liverpool were absolutely desperate for a centre back so were willing to pay through the nose. Don't know how much of a precedent the Van Dijk figure will be

I’ve actually always thought Riyad is better and have said it before. People laugh at me.
I don’t, but then again, that’s not to say I don’t think Mahrez is a fantastic player. In reality, they’re both tremendous to watch and, fortunately, one of them plays for us.

Coutinho is the better player for me. He will move around desperate to get on the ball and get involved making self sacrificing runs off the ball and as a result has a greater impact on games even if it's not him that gets the assist or goal.

Mahrez tends to wait for the ball to come to him. Mahrez is a fabulous player but hasn't shown the same attitude or consistency (throughout a game) as Coutinho.

Agreed although I think Mahrez is more skilful.

Riyad doesn’t get injured nearly as often either.

No, he'd need to get more involved to get injured ;)

In fairness, he's not the type of player to get stuck in. If he did, his legs would probably snap! He's not one to challenge for headers (as a rule) either. He tends to steer clear of the rough stuff.

Noise on twitter now that Liverpool have made initial contact with us. So either someone one here has called it correctly, or someone on twitter has been reading TB.

Either way we’ve got to to be pushing for a big fee.
