I agree with you Lincs. However, I'd suggest that having a bunch of unemployed youths with naff all to do except seeking respect in a criminal world is an early start point for 'reasoning'. Gang culture is a massive problem in London largely ignored because it mostly affects an underclass. Deaths are normally just another kid - there's no carrot for the coppers to improve the situation and it's too insignificant for government....the poor communities have incredibly poor voting turn-out.

Many of the coalition's detractors will blame these riots on the social problems their policies have brought about, already the closure of youth clubs and projects have been cited in some quarters. These people are wrong and your post is far closer to the mark. It may well have started as a reaction to the death of Mark Duggan but what is happening now is one-upmanship, plain and simple. The violence has spread well beyond Tottenham and the rioters have probably even stopped believing that they're making any kind of political point, assuming the earliest of the rioters did in the first place.

This lot make the May Day anarchists and the morons who hijacked the student protests look savvy by comparison. The causes of this lie far, far deeper than the flawed policies of the ConDems.

Scary stuff, even from afar. Shocking images, London looks like a war zone.

Meanwhile, over here retirement funds throughout the nation are blown to bits by ideologues and thieves. Something deeply wrong in our modern world.

It's an absolute disgrace, something needs to happen fast. I've heard plenty of things about rioting in other places and I can't believe people actually want to start more in other places...

It's just a laugh a minute living less than 1 mile from Peckham with a burnt out bus being 500 yards away.

This is ****ing tense. All of the shops where I live are boarded uP and closed to protect livelihoods. Gangs are wandering the main streets looking for anexcuse to kick off.

Meanwhile upstairs my 18 month son sleeps, I don't think I'll sleep very well tonight.

Some peoples sense of humour need a reality check.

If it wasn't so close you wouldn't care about the humour.

The people rioting now are, IMO, just pent up proper like football scum who now have a way to commit violence without being held culpable

Correct of course and probably on both points.

Had a text from my mate earlier. He was working in Northampton today and his train journey had him changing at Birmingham. However, New Street station has been closed because of these ****ing lowlife scumbags, so he's stuck there for the night. Sympathies CF. I hope every last one of the ****s gets shot in the ****ing face.

This is getting worse by the minute, in London looting/violence/rioting confirmed in tottenham, Enfield, Croydon, Ealing, clapham, Peckham, Brixton, Camden...what the **** do the police do to stop this?

At the risk of sounding like a reactionary, the police have patently lost control of the situation. The kind of tactics formerly employed in Northern Ireland may not be far away now; tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons could very well end up on the streets of London if the rioting continues to worsen.

Worrying times.

I don't think they could ever feasibly have had control, it is too widespread and happening too quickly

The nature of its spread is unprecedented. When one looks at riots of comparable scale, the riots in Bradford and Oldham in 2001 being the most recent example that springs to mind, they came about because of anger and disenfranchisement at street level.

This one is being spread by brain donors on Facebook and Twitter. For that reason, the police may now decide to alter their tactics to come down fast and hard on the rioters and tactics we may normally deride as heavy-handed could well be the only answer. The only thing I hope is that Mark Duggan's death, the one that sparked all of this madness, is the last one involved in this saga.

Feck me. Currently on holiday and just caught some news for the first time since Saturday morning, Wish I hadn't have bothered.
