They all go through an audition process in front of production staff before going in front of the “judges”. The average ones are chucked out at the first hurdle with the good ones and the really crap ones being allowed through to the main “judges”. So some vetting does go on.

Apparantly the vetting is only done at smaller venues, my gf's mate went to one at Stoke and got vetted, but the ones at Brum, Manchester, London, Dublin etc apparantly go straight through to the judges. Just what I've heard like

As I said earlier in the thread, read Ben Elton's Chart Throb and you will never watch it in the same light again.

According to his version, they basically pre-select the final few at the application stage. The open auditions are used to get those pictures of a 100,000 entrants and they only get to see the production team.

They can then spend time filming the meaty scenes with the (future) potential finalists - there is no way that the judges can spend that amount of time even on 100 entries.
