Leicester City are delighted to announce that we have agreed terms with Algerian international Riyad Mahrez on a contract extension to June 2019.

Riyad, 24, commits his future to the Foxes following a meteoric rise since joining the Club in January 2014.

Arriving at King Power Stadium as a relative unknown from Ligue 2 side Le Havre, Mahrez helped Leicester win promotion to the Barclays Premier League in his first season, which ended with a maiden call-up to represent Algeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals.

His reputation enhanced from his experience in Brazil, Riyad continued to shine during his debut season in the Premier League, producing a string of exciting performances across the forward line and making a significant contribution to the Foxes memorably securing their top-flight status.

A brilliant solo winner in a crucial December victory at relegation rivals Hull City and a match-winning double against Southampton during the run-in were undoubted highlights of the campaign.

Riyad signs new terms just days before the start of the new Barclays Premier League season on Saturday, when Mahrez stands to make his 50th league appearance for Leicester as they host Sunderland at King Power Stadium.

City’s Algerian international has been prominent during preparations for the new campaign, having featured in four of the Foxes’ five pre-season fixtures and scored in both the win at Lincoln City and the win at Rotherham United.

If he keeps his form up there is no chance we will keep him. He's brilliant.

So this guarantees we make a nice wedge on him when Spurs inevitably come calling.

From the preseason highlights, his shooting looks to have improved.
Thought last season it was very powder puff.

So why would we sell him? The owners have made clear they want European football, they will not achieve their aim by selling the best players we have, just because a so called 'bigger' club knocks on the door. For the first time I honestly believe we are not a selling club any longer, we have, or the owners have the financial clout to keep who they buy, unless of course there is a better option elsewhere in which case we do as the big boys do buy first sell later.

Everyone's a selling club, with the exception of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Good in a way, I suppose. I can't help but think we won't be smiling when he h's a great season and it turns out this new contract has the inevitable release clause in around the 8m mark.

Does the amount we receive actually impact us that much?

I'm sure that they have what is currently a fair release clause, if there even is one. If he is worth more than that, it means he's had a great season (and probably we're still in the PL).

I think it affects fan moral certainly. When you see Ross Mccormach going for 12m and Southampton selling their kids for 10m+, fans want to think we are competing.

Oh. I can't say I care tbh, but everyone's different.

I think being disappointed about a completely hypothetical situation is stretching it a little though. How do you know we haven't removed a £5m release clause from his old contract?

With another season or two under his belt and with his current curve of improvement maintained there is no reason to believe he won't be worth in the region of £20-£25 million.

I didn't mean to imply I was disappointed, I'm not. Just think that these new contracts tend to be double edged swords and it's not just a case of "we get loads for him now" as someone mentioned before I posted.

What?! He has signed a new contract?! Has he not yet heard that the club have appointed the godawful Ranieri?
