Almost here already, county play a few friendlies starting on Friday then the Uni match against Loughborough starting a week Saturday.

And in three weeks we face the West Indies!

I fear another disappointing season with a few bright spots from our young batsmen.

Fixtures: http://www.leicestershireccc.co.uk/lc/Team/1st-XI-Fixtures-Results/2009-Fixtures

I think it's a given that we can't be highly competitive this season.

However, I think if some of the young batsmen (and I think we are talking about batters rather than bowlers where frankly I don't see that much promise amongst the youngsters) continue to improve then not all will be doom and gloom. I can also see some spirited performances coming from a young team in the limited overs games like in last season's Pro 40 victory over Derbys and surely a class bat like Dippenaar must score a lot more runs this season.

Todays friendly at Grace Road against Warks

hope it's not a sign of how the season will pan out

31-5 off 14 overs

Warks need 170 to win

currently 91-2

2 day match against Notts. County made 367-5 from 95 overs centuries from Nixon and Allenby.

Notts are 269-3, at tea

Team: New, Smith, Cobb, Nixon, Allenby, J.Taylor, du Toit, White, Naik, Harris, Gurney.

Thanks for the updates. Depressing to see du Toit still featuring close to the first team, I just didn't think he was up to it from his form last year

Notts finished on 433-6. Naik was the pic of the bowlers 3-91

Next up Worcester at grace Road on Weds in a 50 overs match

On another point how come County are playing all their friendlies at home this year? Derby are playing all theirs away and Notts are mostly all away too. No a big deal I know but surely every ground can only take so much before the season gets going.

Outer tracks? May/ June good months for any recovery of those strips.

another 1 day thumping losing by 67 runs to Worcester

also news that O'Brien's arrival may be delayed, apparently we have a plans in place just in case.

Hope so, because the seamers we have got haven't been exactly making use of these damp spring pitches so far :icon_eek:

Read in a season preview somewhere, may have been The Wisden Cricketer, that Ackerman's work permit expires this year and so won't be around next year. Is that right? I thought the whole point of the Kolpak thing was that they could work in the EU?

Would explain why we have got the cash to sign soneone like McDonald for next season though?

The laws have been tightened up, which is why we couldn't get DuPreez back. I think a player needs to have played international cricket in the past 2 years on signing their contract.

We can't really hang on to HD for ever though. Kolpaks were always in my eyes a short term measure and now we have to hope we see the likes of Cobb and Taylor grow up in the next season.

As for the team's chances this year. Well, the team has been weakened so I don't see why we should expect anything better than last year. I'm not sure about O'Brien, hes not really overly impressed in tests for NZ. Why can't we attract world class players as overseas players?

Why can't we attract world class players as overseas players?

Until the IPL and ICL there was no remunerative cricket available to them in our summer except for playing in England.

These days counties only seem to get the top class players (excepting those retired from international cricket) for portions of the season.
