His first start as a striker was (I think) the 4-2 win over Swindon in December 1992. He didn't score, but he took to playing up front immediately (unlike Matt Elliott who took a while to get used to it).

Don't often (if ever) disagree with Webbo "the voice of reason" Webmaster, but...

Matt Elliot started out his career as a striker and had played there many times before he came to us. I don't remember him taking a while to get used to anything... he was playing up front at a much higher level than Walshy was, and never had more than a few games up front at any one time. Don't think you can compare the two situations really...

I'm not saying Elliott was no good up front, just that he didn't play with a striker's instinct when he first played there. Nothing to do with quality, but to do with the way he was used to playing.

For example as a defender when you're defending against high balls you generally try to get height and distance to your headed clearance, whereas a striker attacking the same ball would try to flick it on to the striker playing alongside him, or hold it up and try to bring his team mates into the game.
It took Elliott a while to get used to this, in his early games up front he didn't appear to have the awareness of the players around him that a target man needs. He looked like a defender playing up front, whereas Walsh seemed to take to it immediately.

Steve Walsh would sort out both our defence and attack. When you think about it, Dion Dublin is the destitute's version of Steve Walsh.

To be fair to Dublin we have only seen him at the end of his career. He could also boast that he played for Man U, Where as Walshy spent his best days with us. Walshy will never go down in history for being the greatest defender, but he gave something that is all to rare these days. Loyalty, 100% commitment and a genuine love of playing for the club.

can't disagree with you. i was comparing the two on the basis of their time at city, a bit harsh on Dublin i suppose

I think MON said that Steve Claridge was a poor mans Kenny Dalglish. I thought that was a rather good description. In hindsight i should have put super Stevie Claridge in the poll rather than Shilton.

I've voted for Lineker - because his goals would be priceless. However, I would bracket him with the late, great Arthur Rowley. 'Big Arthur' had the gift of winning games through his incredible finishing powers even in matches when as a team we were clearly second best.

I cannot believe you managed to leave such greats as Ian Ormondroyd, Phil Gee, Michael Trotter, Nicky Platneauer, Brian Carey, Peter Weir, Nicky Cross, Mick Kennedy, Billy Davies, Tony Spearing, Marc North out of such a list. Come on Brauny it is meant to be a true legends list. I apologise now if I left any other players who made such a devastating effect down at Filbo, and we thought the players we had now were bad !

Me (for glasses) or Feeley (as a career)? :102: :icon_lol:

A bit harsh on my part. Actually from what i can remember Feeley did get stuck in. I can't recall where he went after Leicester. Not sure if he went to a London club like Brentford:102:

he's a prison officer now and a big fecker as well so choose your words carefully ;)
