American teenage prodigy Freddy Adu has started a two-week trial with Premiership leaders Manchester United. Adu, 17, was allowed to attend by MLS club DC United, but will not be able to play in a competitive match as he does not have a work permit.
Chelsea are reported to have rejected the chance to sign Adu, who is the youngest-ever USA international.
Despite his reputation, Adu trained with United's academy players at their Carrington training ground.
Ghana-born Adu was 16 when he made his international debut for the USA in a friendly against Canada.
United are thought to be keen to arrange a match behind close doors at some point during Adu's stay.
Earlier this month, boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed United would be keen on signing Adu if he could prove himself.
Ferguson said: "I think we would be interested, he's only young but we have known of him for a long time.
"We tried to get him here some years ago but he signed for DC United and that stopped the progress of us keeping tabs on him."
Earlier this year Adu's agent Richard Motzkin claimed he had held talks with both United and Chelsea.

lets see if he is all he is cracked up to be!

i wish him luck!

Speaking to some US footie fans, they reckon hes very average and nowhere near the stage of development of other 'world-class' players at his age. If Man United bought him, he would be straight off to Royal Antwerp.

I think it's all much about nothing really

The USSF/MLS/sponsors hyped him up way too much. This put an unrealistic expectation on his abilities. Yes, he dominated as a 13/14 year old against U17 teams but he struggled at the last U20 WYC. He is only 17, so still time for him to develop as he does have decent talent.

The world football phone in on radio 5 had previously called his 'real' age into question. They said there was infact no proof he was only 16 (at the time) and that some people suspected he was actually older.

At the age of 14, his bone development was that of a 16-17 year old. Thats the reasoning behind reckoning he was so good at 14 against 17 yr olds but now here's levelled out, he aint the player he was.

Basically, its the same as any academy player in the Uk whose picked up young, they get picked because they have geniune skill but some of them are big and physical for their age and its when they get to 16, there is little or no difference to the next 16 yr old on sunday mornings. The ones with the brain and skill are the ones who do well and get contracts. It just happens to be Adu is from America who have yet to have had a superstar player.
