Anti Malware Recommendations?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent free anti malware programme. I got a stupid message saying my computer was locked by the police unless I paid an £100 fine. Obviously this is a virus, got round it by starting in safe mode and disabling the bugger but could do with something that will scan and destroy! Any suggestions?

I use malwarebytes (I think) has rescued a few virus bound pcs and a regular scan picks up some of the worst crap out there.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and pretty good.

I can't believe that the police would do that unless you'd done something wrong. You should just pay up and stop trying to evade justice.
What's the point of having a police force if people don't do as they are told?

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and pretty good.

It is but it didn't pick this one up. Mind you, neither did Symantec.

Boot into safe mode and run malwarebytes, that got rid of it for me.

Disabling it won't get rid of it, it will come back.
