We did extremely well with just 30% ball posession, but clearly Arsenals dominance would eventually pay off as it always does. It demonstrates a weakness in our ability to maintain our own posssesion and to cover and tackle for the ball. It would be interesting to see the stats of who gives our possesion away and who regains it, a la Kante.
Are these sort of stats available anywhere online?

I usually use Squawka: http://www.squawka.com/news/

A couple of things from their stats and reflections on our performance.

We had typically little possession of the ball which was no surprise but our passing just wasn't good enough. Only four players had a passing accuracy of 70%+ (Vardy 82%, Albrighton 76%, Mahrez 76%, Morgan 75%). Both our full backs were under 60% and Okazaki was worst at only 50%. Giving the ball away cheaply cost us badly last night.

Secondly, we were weak in our 1-2-1 duels with opponents. It is something we should have dominated but we didn't. Not one of our players won more than a third of their duels (meaning tackles, fouls, headed challenges and take ons). Only Maguire (44%), Okazaki (43%), Mahrez (42%) and N'Didi (38%) have vaguely respectable figures. Utterly horrific was Morgan who won only 15% of his duels and Fuchs with 22%. How weak and gutless is this against the most powder puff opponents of them all?

Vardy was far and away our best player statistically, followed by Mahrez. Morgan and Fuchs were both shocking in terms of their stats. Schmeichel let in 4 of the 10 shots on target that he faced. He was too exposed.

Last season, we went to Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Everton and were exposed in much the same way. We also got ripped apart at home to Spurs, Chelsea and Man Utd. But for the efforts of Vardy last night, our team performance was much the same as in those games. We're too easy to create clear cut opportunities against because our midfield isn't competitive enough and we make too many unforced defensive errors.

I think the answer is to play three central defenders and three central midfielders.

No, I'm not one of those who wants rid of Mahrez at all - but if a team would pay 40m for the like of a player's performance as seen tonight (and most of last year) why wouldn't you just go for Vardy (currently the premier league's top scorer!?)
We shouldn't be selling him for 40 it's should be 50+

Shocking defending, terrible in-game management, a back four who all looked shaky as the last 15 minutes imploded, a game-changing double substitution from the wiley Wenger. BUT. They looked up for it, played with good intensity and in Vardy and Albrighton had the two best players on the pitch IMO.
Gutted to lose, but there are positives. Especially if we now go and spend serious money on a CB to partner Harry Mag.

****ing hell, reading this thread without knowing the result you would expect the score line to be 6-1 or something similar.

We played well but were out passed and out possessed by one of the best exponents of those two particular forms of football.

My glass is currently about 70% full having watched a good performance that will improve with the addition of Aborra, who I believe is the defensive screen we have been lacking since Kanye.

Some people need to remember 80% of last season and compare how we have just performed compared to that.

Shakespear will not allow perhaps his one and only chance in management to end up in mediocrity.

I am very pleased with that performance as day one.

Schmeichel let in 4 of the 10 shots on target that he faced.

Some of the 6 he stopped where top drawer saves. I thought he had a good game and - agreed- was too exposed.

I enjoyed the game and am hugely disappointed with the result. I thought we might be able to hang on.

Arsenal had so much movement, players to spare all over, and had so much possession, that it was always going to be tough to hang on. They may well be crap defensively but in the middle they can be a joy to watch.

Manner of defeat hugely disappointing, however the performance, effort and commitment were a million miles away from the shite served up last season. Whilst it feels like 3 points dropped, before the game I feared a real hammering and after a minute, it looked like it was on the cards, but from then on what I saw was a team very similar to the title winning side playing with high tempo, energy and causing Arsenal real problems.

Tonight shows how far we have come, to go and slug it out against a top quality side Andy not just set up to park the bus and hope to come away with a 2-0 defeat. We had a real go and that showed me that we will do well this season and along the way cause a shock or two.

I thought Maguire, Albrighton, Okazaki and Vardy were superb, Albrighton showed you don't have to loads of tricks to be creative, Maguire looks a class act, strong in defence, reads the game well and comfortable on the ball, whilst Vardy and Okazaki were relentless in their work rate but also showed good quality and looked dangerous throughout.

Unfortunately for me, and I hate to say this about two legends, but Morgan and Mahrez have to be replaced immediately, their time has come to an end for different reasons. Morgan looks a shadow of his former self, age has caught up with him and it showed last night, whether a fit Huth is the answer or bring in a replacement, but it is clear whilst he remains in the side we will concede goals. As for Mahrez, what a talent, however he is also a shadow of himself, the fire in his belly has gone with us, he clearly needs a new challenge and whilst he stays we are playing with 10.5 players. Replace him with Gray, who doesn't have the talent but over 90 minutes would make more of a contribution to the team, the amount of times he ran into a blind alley, many times running back towards his own goal, there was little conviction in his play and I feel he leaves Simpson exposed defensively.

Finally Shaky, i felt he got the tactics spot on, his subs will be blamed for the result, however I felt regardless of the changes, we were on the ropes and it was a matter of time before Arsenal equalised. The extra firepower and quality was there for all to see. At 3-2 he tried to shore things up by bringing on an extra midfielder in place of Shinji, a sensible decision given the situation, however all that did was invite Arsenal onto us, relinquish territory and isolate Vardy, so rightly in my eyes he decided to replace a tired Matty James with Ian Nacho to try and stretch Arsenal a little more and provide Vardy with support and give us a chance to get out of our own half, unfortunately just after the change we concede 2 which I am afraid to say would probably have happened anyway as we were dead on our feet and Arsenal were camped in our penalty box.

On the who,e I feel on the evidence of this game that we will do well under Shakey this year, and he will learn from games like last night as all Managers do.

Hooray! At last, after some of the mass hysteria at the start of this thread, someone has made a reasoned and rational analysis.

We were defending a lead against the best team in the league for the type of intricate forward inter passing they produce. They were able to bring on substitutes in the calibre of Ramsay, Walcott and Giroud. It was only a matter of time before they scored.

Arsenal got the lucky breaks and our defenders didn't get the rub of the green.

I agree with comments about Morgan (probably past his sell by date but not necessarily past his use by date). Also Ndidi seemed a bit overawed and overwhelmed, certainly not has good as he first promised.

Mahrez spent much of the game playing as a left winger for them. Why was he going backwards so much? Very easily intimidated by Arsenal's clumsy donkey of a left back. A decent winger would have torn him to shreds.

My verdict is that this was actually encouraging and we were unlucky to lose. I don't have many early doors fears after that performance. Well done lads. Even in defense, the weakest area, McGuire & Fuchs were good, so that's promising too. Agree Morgan has to make way for Huth or if we sign him, Gibson.
The player who most under-performed, just like last season, was Mahrez. He was shockingly ineffective and he lost the ball that led to one of their goals.
One of the goals from their corner probably would have been avoided if the team were not re-constituting themselves from substitutions (Ndidi went central and left the man out wide on the left & couldn't catch up with him). Shakespeare addressed this in his post-match interview... he said it's a matter of communication that the players on the pitch and the new ones coming on will be briefed to do better on.
Lots of encouraging signs. Plenty of evidence to suggest that certain errors and weaknesses displayed yesterday will be corrected and that against all the teams in the PL bar a couple or so we will be more than competitive

Seeing Watford get a draw today and Burnley holding on against Chelsea makes me really pissed off that we capitulated. It would be easier to accept if Morgan was beaten for pace by Walcott or done by some Ozil skill, but it was a ****ing header.

Oh well, on to next week.

I agree. The simple fact that we conceded three goals to crosses from fecking Arsenal is an utter embarrassment. That's how you beat them, not how you should get beat by them.

We didn't conced three goals from crosses. Not directly.

There was some great passing in there with at least two of the goals.

Got to agree, we were being cut to ribbons by their passing abilities, that's why taking a midfielder off was a big tactical error by Shakey. it opened he midfield even more and gave the Arses even more space to exploit.
