I cannot understand why they wont let him play for us in the Carling cup.
Surely they have reached the stage of the competion where they would take games seriously and play their best team! ie they dont need Smithy

The last few years Wenger has stuck with his younger players, even in the latter stages of the cup. It would be good for Wenger to see how Smith has progressed by playing him in his cup team.:102:

It's a shame that Arsehole winker won't let us use Smith but C'est La Vie, we'll just have to do it the hard way. BLUE ARMY!

Lets hope they lose to READING tonight then Smith can lay tomorrow

If Arsenal win tonight, he'll have even more time for a lay tomorrow!

Even if Arsenal were to lose, I don't think CL would play Smith. Think he'd give him a rest anyway.

Might have him on the bench. It's going to be a very 'ugly' game I think hence we will playing a defensive looking line up IMO

Spot on Muzz, its a bit of a distraction really, we will get tonked by Bolton with our strongest side. Hope there are no injuries.

I wouldn't want him to play anyway. Give him a rest in a game that really doesn't matter too much, and we don't want to rely on him too much seeing as he's not ours! Gives other players the chance to play and try to prove they deserve a place.

I Think CL and the club will take it very seriously. a good run in the cups will go a long way toward the attendance shortfall in the budget, and it may give CL more options in January. Expect a defensive but 'Strong' (read experienced) line-up.

Well said Feriol, I think the Carling cup could be the best thing in our season this year.

God save us from amateur accountants!!

The three ties so far have been watched by a total of less than 19.000 fans - all paying much reduced prices for admission. Half of that would hardly cover the team's expenses for the games, never mind leave anything to cover shortfalls elsewhere.

We are agreed however that the club and CL will be taking the competitions seriously.

But that's really because we've had fairly unattractive draws so far. If we get through tomorrow the likelyhood is that we'll get a better draw in the next round. With clubs like Arsenal, Viler, Brum, Newcastle, Man U still in the competition (assuming they win their games), we'd have a great chance of drawing a big club or getting a local(ish) derby. A game away at Man U could be worth several hundred thousand to us.

The early rounds of Cups are invariably "fairly unattractive" and the chance of getting a game at Old Trafford is relatively small. I don't think an away tie against ManUtd in the next round would bring us any more than £100,000.

Nothing in what you have written persuades me that "a good run in the cups will go a long way toward the attendance shortfall in the budget" - which was the point I was answering. Yes, the money - any money - will be welcome and for that reason we need to treat the competitions seriously.

50,000 people paying an average of £20 each = gate receipts of a million. We'd get something like 45% of that. Plus the chance that it could be on TV, which is worth even more dosh.
