50,000 people paying an average of £20 each = gate receipts of a million. We'd get something like 45% of that. Plus the chance that it could be on TV, which is worth even more dosh.

And a shortfall of 70,000 spectators at the Walkers over the 23 game season will cost us quite a bit more than twice that amount. The chance of a tie at OT is small - the shortfall in our own takings is a certainty. This leads me to believe that the statement that "a good run in the cups will go a long way toward the attendance shortfall in the budget" is not an accurate one.

Yes, it is important for us to treat the competitions seriously - yes, the money will be welcome - but no amount of fiddling about with imaginary figures will change my view on this.

God save us from amateur accountants!!

The three ties so far have been watched by a total of less than 19.000 fans - all paying much reduced prices for admission. Half of that would hardly cover the team's expenses for the games, never mind leave anything to cover shortfalls elsewhere.

We are agreed however that the club and CL will be taking the competitions seriously.

I did say a 'Good' Cup run. 'Progression' being the vital thing if it is to be significant. and also the oppersition. one game is relitive peanuts, but they add up.

I also said 'Toward' the shortfall. i never suggested it would cover it.

Anyone read Tim's article in the 'Matchday Magazine' on Saturday? Apparently the sale of David Connolly is currently making up for the shortfall so far this season. He suggested we are ahead of budget due to shifting Connors on to Wigan.

Would that be with or without the extra million for them staying up?

No mention and whilst it's still mathematically possible for Wigan to go down I wouldn't expect it to be.

Hi Feriol

Despite my being provoked to substantiate my disagreement with the point you made, I still agree with your more general point that progression is important/essential.

Yes, you did say "toward" - it was the words "a long way" which I disagreed with.

Can we still be friends?

Seems total bollox to me that does. I would have thought they would have budgeted a more realistic line for this season. Selling DC was a bonus to them and should be above and beyond any buget they may have laid out.

The season we went down the club budgeted to finish in last place, thus anything any higher attracts better prize money and the figures are better. We finished 3rd from bottom and I believe we pocketed around £1.25M for that finish.
I think what TD says is just to shut supporters up who will expect all the money to go on the team. Its called keeping the puse strings tight.

Depends. is your sister fit? :icon_lol:

Do you mean 'fit for her age'? Or just 'fit'?

age doesn't matter to me.

anyway.

If arsenal let us keep smith for the season, do you think they will allow him to play in fa cup fixtures?

I would have thought so, they always use their first team so I doubt that Smith would be needed.
