I don't think we'll ever get equality Nathan, I'd love to see it but it will never happen. It's either not enough effort or a contrived effort that goes to far and alienates a lot of people
For example, we've all had to fill out forms where it states "in the fairness of racial equality, please state your background...black, white, asian etc". Well, if true equality was to be achieved this form wouldn't need to be ticked as they wouldn't wish to know our backgrounds. My wife missed out on a job once because the company involved hadn't fulfilled it's quota of Asian employees, this can't be classed as equality. If I was Asian and this happened to me, I would feel extremely patronised
Equality is completely random and equality cannot be targeted otherwise the pure meaning of the term is nullified.
To target "non british" and attract them to football, isn't racial equality, it could be classed as racial prejudice to all parties. What we should be doing is targeting the idiots that make it uncomfortable for any society to attend games.
Has anybody ever considered the logic that football isn't a massively popular sport in Asia, and therefore isn't passed down the Asian generation in the UK as many parents and grandparents of young Asians prefer cricket and there isn't really a great interest in football?
I agree with your sentiment towards equality but I belief there is a new generation of Asian (I sound like a real twat) that prefers Football over Cricket. I can only testify to that when I was at college there is two games at dinner break, one Footy, the other Cricket. 20 were playing Cricket and near on 50 for Football. Secondly, we had six-a-side tourney on both sports one of which is the spotlight of the college (football), the other I didnt even know it was happening to after.
after going to qe all i can say is that many of the asian lads there do like football-however at least 90% of them support arsenal, man united, liverpool or chelsea
Yes, even foreign teams over English. Generally Asians I have met dont know whose top of the Championship.
Just to add I have always seen Football rather than Cricket has a uniting force, the current set-up for grass roots at both sports differ. Whereas as Football is more open and generally in most teams, they seems to be no uniting factor between the players apart from age. For example, my Brother's game yesterday seen Asian play for both sides.
But Cricket is possibly the most racist sport I have encounted, because of the spotlight less on cricket and secondly no local press cover grass roots cricket, the sport seems more sectioned off. I normally see two types of games involving my brother, whose team does not fit the stereotype as Asians and Whites both play, its normally City Team v Team From The County or City Team v Asians.
I remember once when I was in bat for my school team against a school from Hinckley way, our top order 6 involved 5 asians, I came in at 7, hit a couple of balls, scoring a couple, I got the umpires end where the Hinckley's school teacher said 'Nice to see our boys have more displincine and know how to play cricket'
Secondly when at Counthesthorpe for a match, one of our players who was Asian did an extraordinary piece of fielding and ran out a Leicestershire Under-15s player. Their players were saying 'lucky', then we went in to bat our no.1 and no.2 who were Asian kept hitting the boundaries, every time they hit a good shot, the fielders were shouting 'lucky shot'. Then a near-same piece of fielding from one of their players in our innings and some old man on side thought it was the most incredible fielding ever. At first I thought it was simply down to a match in which both showed they want to win but on later thoughts, it was all to do with the expression they said it, down many county grounds regardless of opposition, many will clap a good piece of bowling, fielding or a finely made century. In this game, we had two standout pieces of cricketing which were not appreciated in the same way as the similar circumstances were.
