Did you kick the old leather ball when you were a child?

Kicking a ball v kicking a ball as an adult, there is a vast difference.

New balls are better at transferring the energy of a kick into movement, so you don't have to kick them as hard to get the same distance.

From http://www.answers.com/topic/football-ball#ixzz2Zlcsaphi

The early rules specified a weight of 13–15 oz (370–430 g) which was however changed in 1937 to the current accepted weight, 14–16 oz (400–450 g).

Apart from friendlies, does non-competitive football exist?

I have seen a non-competitive footballer - admittedly only part time professional.

In the early 1960s Worcester City signed a player called Barry (I will leave his surname out because of lawyers). He came to the Southern League from a football league club and was described as "a ball player". We wondered why he had been let go until we watched him.

Barry was more talented with a ball than his colleagues but had all the aggression of Private Godfrey. He timidly gave the ball away if any nasty defender came near him and made it his business not to offend the other side.
He truly was an uncompetitive footballer.

The Worcester City crowd who were not known for their tolerance and of course knew nothing about Barry's private life summed him up after one game. He was simply known as "Fairy".
