Gough's last 10 one-dayers have almost been as bad as Mahmood. Too late for Dazza - the selectors did exactly the right thing.

I wouldn't disagree with someone who knows far more than me about cricket , but however i do find that hard to believe. Mahmood has been shocking imo.

The squad is a no-brainer for the selectors now (presuming they take the 3 injured players). The starting XI is the only question.

Vaughan
Joyce
Loye
Colly
Strauss
Bell
Pietersen
Flintoff
Nixon
Dalrymple
Panesar
Plunkett
Lewis
Anderson
Mahmood

After what has happened in the past week and the team spirit they have shown, my only change to that would be Broad for Mahmood who I still see as a liability

Bopara for Loye but apart from that you're spot on!

I would have had Loye in there ahead of Bopara though, I think he offers something different to any other batsman in that he can attack and make the most of the power plays. I do rate Bopara but can't see what he adds to the side while we have 5 other 'nurdler' type players in the squad.

I still think Vaughan won't make it, and Loye will be called-up anyway. I'm sure he's been told to keep in shape

Thought I'd have a look and see what the stats say to make sure I'm not talking complete rubbish!

Last 10 matches, Gough has 8 wkts at 56.87 with an economy rate of 5.89

That compares with Mahmood:
Last 10 matches: 13 wkts at 35, economy of 5.44
Career: 21 wkts at 41, economy of 6.01

I'm no fan of Mahmood's, but he deserves it more than Goughie.

Whilst Loye did well in terms of attacking the opening bowlers, he failed to turn some decent starts into big scores, we need our top order batsmen to be able to convert these starts into 50's and 100's, I think with Joyce, Bell, Vaughan and Strauss all capable of opening the innings and proven they have the ability, technique and temprament to make big one day scores, the need for another opener was probably deemed inappropriate.

Bopara offers more options than Loye, he is another bowler and offers cover for the middle and lower middle order batting, if Vaughan fails to recover in time then Loye would be the obvious replacement. IMO the selectors have got it just right.

Yes, because that's what Glyn was talking about, he gave a bit of a clue when he called it the "WC Final"

I was sticking up for you webmonger, you miserable sod! :icon_lol:

Great article on Nixon in the Times today.:038:

Better late than never.

Broad called up, Lewis gone home because his wife is due to give birth.

Good news, but doubt he'll get a game. Even useless old Mahmood got 4 wkts today, albeit at 5.5 an over :icon_roll With 4 extras in the final over :icon_roll
