I'm a bit thick when it comes to things like this, what is the benefit of having a static IP address?

It means that you keep the same IP address forever (whilst you are with that supplier) which makes it easier for gaming etc for people to find you.

I want it for web hosting and FTPing to my machine when away from home.

I could just use NoIP but I have never got it to work successfully and don't know if you can use it to FTP

Nope, none whatsoever

I use dyndns for exactly that, works really well.
You can download an app from them that will track your IP and map it to whatever domain name you register with them or a lot of routers have a function built in that will do it automatically for you.

My router has dyndns built in but still couldn't get it to work, was more than likely me just being thick to be honest.

Plusnet do a one month contract.

I'm with plusnet, you can get a wireless router and 15gb limit for £15 a month. Not had any problems with them, customer service is really good.

I use freedom2surf, they get good ratings on adslguide.org but may not be the cheapest option, service has become a bit more patchy since they were taken over by Tiscali.
