As some of you may know I was born and lived the first part of my life in Leicester but I've lived in France now for over 20 years. It's a weird and complex country and no more so than regarding religion. The state decided to separate religion from everyday life a long time ago and the strangest consequence to this until very recently was the non-education of religions and religious understanding in state schools. As a University teacher - who doesn't believe in any God - I see clearly that Britain's Religious education in Schools is far better for society than France's non-education. To understand religious festivals, ideas, customs has helped Britain to be a pleasant multi-cultural mix. The ignorance in France has had the opposite effect. So onto the latest chapter in this story:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/aug/24/french-police-make-woman-remove-burkini-on-nice-beach

A few mayors in coastal resorts have declared that women cannot wear the "Burkini" on beaches. Of course women can walk around in bikinis or even topless on beaches and through coastal resort streets wearing bikinis - men wearing just trunks - but a woman cannot wear a burkini - often highly coloured - on the beach. apparently it may hide something dangerous ( that may be the case but not guns or explosives ;)) Of course my wife and I can walk our dogs on the beach everyday in the winter wearing long hooded coats, Christians wear crosses on the beach etc... This will only lead to problems and I really don't understand the thinking of a country which has a high muslim population thanks to its imperial links to Northern Africa.

And then this morning I see this story:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...muslim-women-islam-muslims-veil-a7207106.html

Inclusive Britain know how to handle a diverse and open population so much better than the French. Many Brits may have voted Brexit because they didn't like the arrival of Romanians/Bulgarians etc... but at least Britain knows how to unite rather than divide. Good on you Britain.

They've withdrawn the ban now, I understand.

It's been overturned in 1 town only at the moment.
