I know. I came through Bootle in both directions - on the way back there was a gang of girls trying to drop one of their number into the canal from a bridge - I think it was the Stanley Road bridge - it's the one with the Liverpool and Everton murials painted on the wall at the side of the canal. Often this kind of thing is just a ruse to get people away from their boats so I just kept on and pretended not to notice.
All boats into and out of Liverpool on the Leeds and Liverpool canal are escorted by British Waterways staff. They say it is because there are a large number of swing-bridges and they are there to minimise the delay to road traffic, but they go right to the Eldonian, miles past the last swing-bridge. The real reason is to provide security for boats and their occupants.
