I was temporarily working in Cambridge, living in a shared bed-sit. Obviously no TV, and TVs in pubs were rare in those days (not to mention the restricted licensing hours) So we decided to take 2 picnic chairs and sit outside an electrical shop to watch, listening to commentary on my trannie (no, that was what we called portable radios). All the shops had closed for the afternoon and had turned off the TVs in their windows. We ended up sitting in the botanic gardens with sound only. I never actually saw the game till the colour film was released

Having seen West Germany in their group games at Villa Park, I didn't think England had a chance in the final so I wasn't too bothered whether I watched it or not. At that time I was doing a paper round and spending a little time doing short shifts behind the counter at the newsagents. When the boss asked me if I would cover the afternoon for triple time, I persuaded him that quadruple time would be more like it and he accepted. Only two or three people came into the shop all afternoon; the village was dead - and I got a pile of money for doing bugger-all.

My interest in watching England has barely increased since that day.

My Mum wasn't interested in football. My Dad was Irish so didn't give a shit.He had a bet on the Germans to win.I was only 18 months old so played in the yard.It actually means nothing to me in any measurable sense.Apart from a slight irritation every time anyone mentions it.Probably because growing up in the 70s,with England failing to even qualify for a tournament, people never stopped ****ing banging on about it.

Nearly 2 decades too early for me. Glad we've achieved so much since as it'd be gutting to miss out.

And here we are 50 years on and nothing has changed :081:

ASDA check-out dollies have a very hard life, I'll have you know.
