Cn't believe they used to get all them tanks and missiles parading through there in the 70's

Those were the days. We had just one enemy, the commies... who weren't really our enemies. The Russian bear was a cuddly bear, who had to stand in long queues for bread. Now we've got real enemies. Dangerous ones. Within and without.

Funny how we had MAD DOG followed by Nutty Holloway. I am fully behind the new strategy of getting a dour pragmatist in (NP). The two aforementioned individuals are not right in the head. They both manage teams to bits and then try to instill a siege mentality to build them up. How about sticking with 11 lads and build them up like any other normal manager!!

There are important differences between Martin Allen and Ian Holloway. Allen's behaviour got him dismissed for "non-football reasons". He left his successors Megson and Holloway a huge squad with a large number of very poor players. Megson got out very quickly.Holloway tried hard to turn things around but failed. Being unsuccessful as a Leicester manager does not make Holloway an unpleasant character; that is an important difference between the two men.
What Allen and Holloway did have in common was that they were hyperactive. There are times when what is needed is a manager to "steady the ship". Following Martin Allen we needed a calming influence and that has been what we got eventually with Nigel Pearson.
The ultimate condemnation of Martin Allen is that he had a close season in which he brought in 14 players not one of which is in the present team. Compare that with Nigel who when Mattock is injured brings in Berner, when Tunchev is injured brings in Brown and then brings in Bunn for Martin. Now that is a sign of good management.

When Gilbert is injured he brings in Edworthy, etc. etc.

Even after Allen's umpteen signings, we still didn't have a natural winger at the club, just shit loads of Right Backs.

We didn't, we followed him with Gary Megson! And also, why is NP dour?

You should be infracted. :018:

Unfortunately the system won't allow for the infraction of mods, otherwise I would be happy to oblige.

Excellent balanced post. The Allen legacy is clear and that summer's signings ultimately put us on the relegation train. Milan attempted to steady the ship with a more pragmatic coach in Megson the Miserable but he jumped ship when a better offer came along.

Holloway's enthusiasm was instrumental in securing him a job that he couldn't manage and after all the turbulence Mandaric left it to late to change it and you can, to a certain extent understand why.

Allen's lack of ability, tactics and judgement of players is now evident to all. Benefit of heindsight and all that but if Pearson or someone of equal style and ability had been available and recruited by Mandaric in the summer of 2007 we would probably be safely back in the Premiership.
