Water Gypsy
For Real Sharapova and anybody else who might remember him, a glimpse of Chris Garland then and now.

Boy Genius said:One of my heros... wish we had a forward like that now.
Thanks for that Boc, made my eyes go all watery thinking about the quality of players we had then
Brauny Blue said:Whilst we had the Worthington and Weller era in the 70's which will have many great memories for the slightly older fans. There was also Roger Davis who was probaly the 70's equivalent of Akinbiyi.
Boy Genius said:Dont get me going on about that lanky twat Davis....... The worst player to wear a blue shirt by a mile. Feck me I wont sleep tonight now BB.
Brauny Blue said:I was a bit of a young springer then, but can recall being excited over us signing him for what i believe was our record fee of around 170K . Big money, and big disappointment.
Brauny Blue said:Who signed him, was it Mc Clintock? If so its not hard to see why he didn't make it as a manager

bocadillo said:Yes, he was a McLintock signing - but more like £250,000 than the figure suggested above.
Yes, he was crap - but he was joint leading scorer in a very crap team! 4 goals out of the 26 that we managed in 42 games that season. (Not that he had anything to do with Chris Garland - they weren't even at the club at the same time)
The young 'uns on here don't know what crap is!!

Brauny Blue said:Spot on. I don't see much of us these days, but followed them through thick and thin between 85-91 and thats got to be the worst group of players we've had in a generation.
Brauny Blue said:BTW Boc, i wouldn't argue with your 250k estimate, but still think my 170k is closer
Brauny Blue said:I bow to your knowledge Boc. Just checked it out and it was around 250K:icon_wink
bocadillo said:There was a gap after Melrose until Moran and Newell and then another gap to Ormondroyd and Philpott FFS! After that I would have to think a lot more.

bocadillo said:Though don't forget that Davies (and Garland) were late 70s rather then the 80s.
I just remember that he took the record from Allan Clarke who came to us for £150,000.
Hector said:Garland actually arrived in early rather than late '70s. I left Leicester in '75 and he had already been there a good while.
Hector said:When Clarke signed in '68 I believe it was a National record, not just a club record (How times change - imagine us breaking transfer records now!). He went to Leeds a year later for £165,000
bocadillo said:He came in March 1975 (checked it yesterday). He debuted in a 2-2 draw at Cov and then got a hat-trick in his third game against Wolves at Filbo a week later.
Your memory is playing tricks on you.
The fee for his move to Leeds was a British record as well.
