Former England International Joins Foxes

Posted on: Sat 23 Aug 2008
Defender Chris Powell has this evening (Saturday) signed a six-month contract with Leicester City.

The 38-year-old former England international left-back has spent the last week training with the Foxes first-team squad and has done enough to impress manager Nigel Pearson.

Powell, who is also the current chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, will now be available for Wednesday night's Carling Cup second round tie at Fulham..

Pearson said: "Chris has been with us this week and trained very well.

"He is coming towards the end of his playing career but is still very fit. He has been put through some rigorous testing and passed with flying colours.

"He is a very experienced head who will complement our young backline very well."

Powell began his career in December as a trainee at Crystal Palace before joining Aldershot on loan.

In August 1990 he moved on a free to Southend United and went on to make 288 appearances.

A switch to Derby County followed in January 1996 then in June 1998 he was transferred to Charlton Athletic for £825,000.

Whilst at the Valley, some notable performances earned him a call-up to the England squad under Sven-Goran Eriksson at the age of 31.

Powell played a major part in West Ham United's successful 2004/05 promotion campaign before returning for a second spell at The Addicks.

On July 1 2006 he signed a one-year contract with Premier League newcomers Watford then re-signed for Charlton.

Powell made his final appearance for Charlton on May 4 this year, coming on as a substitute for the final five minutes in the last game of the season against Coventry and scored only his third goal for the club to help seal a 4-1 victory.

does it really matter how old he is? we need a proper left back, on the evidence of today dyer is no full back and tunchev would be wasted there.

After seeing today's game, I'd say we need him.

decent enough cover for 6 six months, Dyer did ok considering he was out of position but i would want a proper defender away from fortress walkers.

I'm very pleased with this signing. We have a young defence and his experience will be a valuable asset.

Never mind how old he is, or indeed how good/bad he is, let us rejoice: he is a genuine "Left Back", until recently thought to be mythical creatures only found in the very far end of the woods.

Behold his shiny horn............

Round pegs for round holes - this might well prove to be City's most crucial deal of the whole transfer window.

smart move a very smart move on Nigel's behalf.......dangle a 6 month contract with the option of another 6 months on performance.Dyer is needed further up the sideline on the left.

Good move imo. Good, experienced defender who will bring a lot to the squad off the pitch as well as on.
