at last some good news
Leicester City have teamed up with Hewitt Sportsturf ahead of the new 2008/09 season.
The Walkers Stadium pitch has struggled to cope with the rigourous demands placed upon it this term.
But the club have now made an impressive signing, enlisting the help of Managing Director John Hewitt, of Cosby-based Hewitt Sportsturf, who have specialised in the design and construction of natural grass sports surfaces for over 30 years.
Hewitt Sportsturf have already worked with a number of football clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Arsenal and Norwich City.
The highly-reputable company was also commissioned to install the technically advanced pitch at the new Wembley Stadium.
City's pitch, which was originally installed by Hewitt Sportsturf back in 2002, will include the latest technology, above and below ground, to ensure an impressive playing surface throughout the duration of the campaign.
Hewitt himself will also act as consultant for the club, liaising on a regular basis with City's ground staff at both the Walkers Stadium and Belvoir Drive Training Ground Complex.
"I am delighted to back involved," admitted Hewitt. "It wasn't by choice that I left a few years ago but I had no hesitation in accepting the club's offer and hopefully we can move forward and look forward to a bright future together again.
"As a company we consult and contract for a number of top Premier League clubs but it is always nice to be involved with your home-town club.
"I can't wait to get started."
Hewitt also explained what would need to be carried out during the course of the close season.
He added: "Because of the better weather and lighter nights, the general condition of the pitch will only improve between now and the end of the season by natural form but come June, we'll completely take the top four inches off and renew it.
"I know it may seem a bit difficult to understand but there is not a great deal wrong with the surface; it is only within the top four inches where the problems lie.
"So by replacing the top section, it will take it back to its original construction.
"The initial work should take about two weeks but then part of the on-going agreement will see me maintaining a close working relationship with the club's ground staff on a regular basis
"It helps only being five miles down the road!"
Meanwhile, manager Ian Holloway is delighted that the Foxes have managed to secure the services of Hewitt Sportsturf.
"Our current surface doesn't help anybody and although it's not any individual's fault, it needs sorting," he said.
"You can't have the ball bobbling up around your ear holes!
"We have decent players who can pass the ball and this stadium deserves a wonderful pitch.
"Mr Hewitt has guaranteed us that he can sort it out so that's absolutely fantastic news - it's great to have him back on board."
