The former. The latter is only said by common folk who think it sounds posh. It's wrong.

Not at all. The English 'magic e' split diagraph states it should be pronounced the same as stone. Gone is an anomaly, so technical saying scone the same way is only done by people who don't understand English. I expected better from you.

'Scone' is also anomalous. As is 'done', which appears in your sentence. Or do you think that rhymes with 'stone' as well? :icon_wink

You don't half come out with some drivel! ;)

There is clearly a divergence of opinion here. You can cast your vote on the matter at http://twtpoll.com/ff3vyg

Done is indeed, scone isn't and you won't convince me otherwise!

I would guess that words that are anomalous originated or received their modern spelling before the Great Vowel Shift of the Middle Ages and so were set then. The word scone apparently originated in ~1513 so would be a close call.

There seems to be no definite convention, but it appears 66% of the English (and all of the Scots) are idiots.

I've just had a year of phonics teaching hammered into me, I'm sick to bloody death of it, but it does occasionally allow me to sound like I know what I'm talking about!

Even when you don't.

Obviously.

It's not the spoken word that is the problem
it's the ritten werd. Peeples spellin is gettin werse.

I'm convinced I can make this dirty somehow.

You made riding up and down an escalator in Stockholm dirty, so you'll have no problem with this one.
