On the OS re Johnny King who played between 1943-1955

John 'Boy' King used to sit behind me in the Carling stand at Filbert Street. A very friendly gentleman and a link to times long gone.

R.I.P.

City seem to have this effect on players from that era and up to 1970's/1980's that they keep coming back after they have finished their careers. It seems that every time one dies that they kept on coming to games, sometimes till quite late in life.

I guess it gets in their blood like it does to us fans!!

Will some of todays players be coming down the Walkers in about 30 40 or 50 years time. I don't think so. In most cases I doubt some of them will ever come back unless the Club invite them for a special occasion.

Although very slight in stature he was a very decent wing half playing alongside Norman Plummer and "Spider" Harrison in the late 40's early 50's

I got the wrong King as did the Mercury!

I would think you probably confused him with Ian King who will be about 10 years younger than the chap who died. The odd thing about it is that Ian King's name isn't in fact Ian - he was another John but never used that name.

I'm not aware of the Mercury error. What did they do?

More of the players from those days either were local or alternatively spent much longer with the club than the players of today and therefore developed a long term affinity with the club.

I saw Johnny King play towards the end of his career and as Western says he was a very useful player.

My guess would be that most of the playing staff these days would know absolutely nothing about the club and its history - and at one level why should they. In those days it was quite different with people like Chandler on the books for decades as player & backroom staff.

'Tis Ian King I meant. Apparently the Mercury used a picture of the King I am referring to in their newspaper and recently published an apology to both families.

Your probably right there Redditch, look how long George Dewis was attached to the club after his playing days were over

A different age Western. Also, Sep Smith, 20 years a Leicester player.

Of course, in those days players were much more tied down contractually and the maximum wage stipulation restrained transfer activity.

you're right with a differant age........... its that long ago i'd vitually forgotten most of it.

no floodlights
2pm kickoffs in winter
leather boots and footballs

probably talking balls to the young-uns but there you go :icon_bigg
