I've got an issue at work with a website I look after.

A couple of weeks ago the site went down for a few days, apparently due to a server issue. As a result the website developers who look after the server for us decided to move the site onto a new server. Since then an issue has arisen with the DNS settings, where the website can no longer be found. This has been ongoing for the past couple of days now.

The website designer has said
The latest issue is due to moving servers and lies with the DNS servers for the domain (out of our control) just taking a little longer than anticipated to resolve to the new server.
.

Could anyone suggest how long moving the DNS servers should take, and if it's possible to do this without the loss of service I've suffered.

Basically I want to know if they're taking the piss.

Cheers

If they knew about the change in DNS settings in advance they could have organised it so the downtime was minutes rather than days.

Without doing any advance planning it can take a couple of days for DNS settings to resolve but normally most people would be able to see the site again much quicker than that. It can depend on your ISP how long it can take.

If you want to PM me the site address (assuming you don't want to post it here) I can have a look at the DNS records to see if it looks OK.
