Russell Hoult played around 150 PL games for West Brom and Derby.

Des Lyttle played 90 PL games for Forest, Watford and West Brom.

Scott Oakes for Sheffield Wednesday.

Matt Piper for Sunderland.

Jordan Stewart for Watford.

Fair enough, but 7 in 20 years isn't a great output. 2 in the last 10 isn't great either.

I don't know how it compares to the academies of other similar sized clubs, but it just doesn't seem that good to me.

I can't think of any young player who hasn't been given a chance with us but then went on to prove us wrong. Not since Pat Bonner anyway, and that was 40 years ago.

I'd forgotten about Des Lyttle. I'm pretty sure the reason Pleat got rid of him is because he found it confusing having a Des Lyttle and a Des Linton in the same squad.

We must have invested a fortune in developing 1000's of players over the last 20 years and overall, I think you've got to say it's been unsuccessful.
But the aim of a top flight academy isn't to populate sides with their home-grown any longer. They're nothing more than meat factories pumping out kids for sale to other teams. No one is Dario Gradi any more, not even Dario Gradi.

And Brian Little was worried he'd be accused of favouritism.

Not the same thing.

Gradel was an established player who played 30+ games for us. He'd been given a chance, and the manager decided to sell him.

I don't remember him playing that many games, I do remember wishing he played more though.

I'm N'Guessan that was when we'd seen enough of the new guy?

Not one of the better signings we had under Steve Walsh's regime.

Somebody must've accidently copied the being able to run forward and sometimes head the ball stats into every other attribute box.

The circumstances aren't comparable though. As someone said, this squad won the league.

I can't remember a time when there was such a gap between the first team and the academy before now.

We've also spent decades where we've paid lip service to the academy rather than put some serious investment into it.

Our record under our current owners has been much better - after all it's Rudkin's record with the academy that the owners saw fit to recognise with a massive promotion - and I think our young players are much better currently.

Schlupp is the best example but there have been high hopes for several others, including Dodoo.

Dodoo may or may not turn out to be a good player, but the fact that he feels that he is better off at Rangers at such an early stage of his development concerns me.

Choudhury has talent, as has Chilwell and Muskwe and several others. I'd suggest this group is more promising than any other we've had.

This time last year, Dodoo was a part of the preseason group and made a number of positive appearances for the first team at the start of the season. Now he's chosen to leave.

All I'm saying is that there is evidence building that our young players with potential are looking at the volume of players ahead of them and are choosing to go. My solution to this would be to be quicker and clearer to remove unsuccessful signings from the squad.

Choudhury seems to have been involved with the first team squad so far during pre-season - he was on the Austria tour and played against Oxford - so maybe he'll be getting s chance this year. Certainly seems to have bulked up.

So you don't agree with something?

I wonder if those at the club are better able to judge whether Dodoo is good enough for us?

I know Chelsea and the Manchester clubs have 40-50 players most of whom are loaned out, but beyond our named 25 squad, do we have that many players that are preventing academy players from getting a look in?

Or maybe the player thought it best to leave for first team football at a settled club rather than be loaned out here, there and everywhere.

Realistically he wasn't going to get much of a look on here this coming season and if he has that much talent, he'll score goals for fun up there to earn a move back down here eventually.

Could be an excellent move for him.

Even if he has sod-all talent he'll score goals up there.

Leigh Griffiths (wolves sub), Gary Hooper (Sheff Wed sub), Adam Rooney (couldn't get in the Oldham team) are/were goalscoring machines in Scotland.

But I agree with your general point.
