We are changing the name of our company and we are looking at new domain names for both the website and the email addresses.

What do people think to domain names that are simply 2 letters and 2 numbers? i.e. NA21.co.uk? That isn't the one we are thinking of having (or else one of you bastards would buy it up and charge us a fortune!) and the one we want isn't a postcode anywhere in the uk.

Someone has said that they would think any email from that type of address is spam and delete it immeadiately. Do you think the domain should give an idea of what the business does? Any feedback is very much appreciated and we thank you for taking your time in helping to provide your opinion.

:shock: Probably a wise move not choosing that name

It either needs to clearly convey what and who you are, or your business needs to be already really well known.

www.dhl.com or ups.com shouldn't cause any problems, for example

you mean apart from the one that auto linked from your post. :icon_wink

What's the purpose of the website? To get the site ranked well ina short time its a good idea to use a domain with keywordkeyword.tld in it. If you have ££££ and time then any old random tld will be fine. Having said that 3/4 letter domains are like rocking horse shit for a reasonable one. I'd be surprised if you got one for a tenner.

godaddy - try this site that auctions off old domains.

Not for public perception it isn't. It depends what they want out of the site. Lots of people don't trust unusual TLDs

The site is for advertising our company (architects). We have an existing site that works well enough but with the name change we need a new domain for the website and emails. The name of the new company .co.uk is taken but not in use. We know if we contact the person who owns it though that they will ask silly money for it.

Worth trying though surely?

Unless it's something like sex.com.

What I meant was any old random.com or .co.uk, however you can use .biz .net and a few others and maintain that trust. I should have been more specific.

If there is a domain name you want offer an amount based on what you think its worth.

There are rules regarding domain squatting. If you can prove that you have been using a name for a period and it is key to your business and the owner either has no rights to the name or isn't responding to reasonable requests to sell within a reasonable time then there is a panel at nominet.co.uk that will deal with it.

This may be problematic if the company name is new, as it would be hard to prove you have any more right to it than them. If you go to nominet.co.uk and use the whois lookup in the top right corner on the domain it will tell you when it expires. If they have forgotten about the name then when it expires you can lodge a bid to take over it, though I think they have 90 days to renew it.

This is all roughly right, there may be nuances.

The problem as your rightly say is that it is a new company name (for us so the first option wouldn't really work for us.

She only renewed/purchased it in August this year and we can't wait 2 years.
