City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been named on the three-man shortlist for the Sky Bet Football League Championship Player of the Year award.
The Foxes playmaker, 24, is joined by Burnley’s Danny Ings and Leeds United’s Ross McCormack among the nominees, with the winner to be announced at The Football League Awards 2014, which takes place this Sunday, 16 March, at The Brewery, London.

Danny is the second City player to be nominated for a major honour at Sunday’s event, with defender Liam Moore also shortlisted in the Young Player of the Year category.

The Sky Bet Player of the Year awards have been voted for by managers of the clubs in each division. Each manager was asked to list their top five players from this season in order, with the scores added up to get a shortlist and an overall winner.

The Football League Awards honour achievements, both on and off the pitch, across The League's 72 clubs, rewarding players, clubs and fans in 13 categories, which include the Family Club of the Year, Johnstone’s Paint Community Club of the Year, Capital One Supporter of the Year and the Tokio Marine Unsung Hero award. On the pitch, the League Football Education Apprentice of the Year will be chosen for each division, as will the Sky Bet Player of the Year, while the Young Player of the Year and the Mitre Goal of the Year will also be chosen.

The players in contention for the Sky Bet League 1 and Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Year awards have been announced.

Rochdale's Scott Hogan, Chesterfield's Gary Roberts and Sam Winnall of Scunthorpe United are the three players in the running for the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Year award, while Adam Forshaw of Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers' Kevin McDonald and Swindon Town's Alex Pritchard make up the three-man shortlist for the Sky Bet League 1 Player of the Year award.

Pritchard is also on the shortlist for the Young Player of the Year, alongside Leicester City's Liam Moore and Derby County's Will Hughes.

Supporters will get a front row seat for Sunday’s Awards with live coverage of the ceremony being broadcast to a global online audience on multiple channels. Fans can watch all the action unfold by heading to FLAwards.com, The Football League's official YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as official club websites and YouTube channels. There will also be a variety of live online partners taking the event to fans around the world.

In total, 34 clubs have been nominated so far, with Championship side Derby County leading the way with four nominations, while a further 14 clubs have been nominated twice.

Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City)
It is fair to say that Danny Drinkwater has been a real driving force behind Leicester City’s bid for promotion from the Sky Bet Championship this season. The 24-year-old has been an ever-present in the heart of the Foxes’ midfield, his work-rate and passing ability making him a real favourite at King Power Stadium. Drinkwater is one of the Championship’s most consistent performers, as recognised by his Player of the Month award for December, and any player in the division will tell you that they have been in a game when facing up to the former Manchester United man.

Danny Ings (Burnley)
Front-man Ings has made huge strides as a Sky Bet Championship player this season and his partnership with Sam Vokes is one of the main reasons why Burnley are enjoying a successful campaign. Ings has been almost unstoppable at times in 2013/14 with his pace and movement, allied to some deadly finishing, taking him to the 20-goal mark by the first weekend in January. The 21-year-old’s superb form has not gone unnoticed and he is also now a member of Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21 squad with two international goals to his name already.

Ross McCormack (Leeds United)
McCormack’s prior exploits in the Sky Bet Championship show that his goals tally for 2013/14 should come as no surprise – though this season is the best of his career in terms of goalscoring. The 27-year-old passed 20 Championship goals for the season when smashing in a hat-trick in the first match of February, while he also scored four times in one game back in November. Combine McCormack’s strikes with his assists and he has been involved in around three-quarters of Leeds’ goals this season. He also wears the captain’s armband and there is no doubt that the Scottish international makes the Yorkshire side tick.

Isn't it voted for by the Championship players along with the team of the season? In which case, getting them to vote for anything whilst their on their holidays would be impossible. My guess is that they can only be trusted to get votes in if the polls take place this early.

Great to see Danny nominated because, as Prof said, it's rare for a non-goalscoring midfielder to get recognised - although Danny has scored a few recently! Think he's creeped up to 7 for the season now?

Think Ings will win it though, but let's hope for Danny because it would be well deserved.
