Can someone explain to me what has happened the last few weeks. I've found some news stuff but haven't got a clear understanding of what is taking place...

The EDL were coming to Leicester.

It's like the teddy bears going on a picnic but with slightly less cuddles.

Ridiculous stats:

800 people attended the EDL march
200 marched in the UAF event

Officers from 17 police forces were involved
About 2,200 police officers
24 police horses
18 police dogs

No arrests were made

They're trying to protect everybody from the Muslamic rayguns

The traffic was stopped at Fosse Park this morning so the convoy of around 30 Police vans/cars could head down Narb Road with sirens going... they obviously meant business today.

Radio Leicester had commentators with both lots of marchers as well
They kept going to them in the same way they go to footy commentatora to report on the action, or as on this occasion the lack of action. With the Police numbering more than the marchers this was always going to be a big band of wind on both sides blowing away and shouting their vitorial (in EDL's case)

They marched in from Abbey Park, down St Margaret's Way and up to the Clock Tower, escorted by Plod. Then they waved their flags a bit, exchanged a few insults with the SWP counter demo, somewhat incongruously gathered by the entrance to Highcross - then marched back again.

Most of Leicester was closed down (so what's new?), a huge number of police transit riot vans from all surrounding counties parked up around the city centre. Also a whole load of police down at St Matthews. Lots of hoodies running around which for once I found slightly comforting.

Basically, the Leicester Mercury reported a story about how a white girl was disappointed that her four, female attackers weren't jailed. For the record, the LM was the only news reporting service in court on that day.

Two weeks later, the Daily Fail and The Sun picked up on the story, and used a combination of over-exxageration, selective reporting, and blatant lies to whip up a frenzy that this was a racist attack, and should have been dealt with as such. The LM later contacted the CPS to get their reasons for not pursuing that line, and was told there was not enough evidence.

It also focused on a comment made in the plea in mitigation that as Muslims, these girls couldn't handle their drink, with the reports saying that these girls were freed (they were never in custody in the first place) on the basis that alcohol was a factor. The Judge never made reference to this in his sentencing remarks, something the LM was keen to point out, and even got a transcript of the hearing to double check (would be nice if they published it...).

This has angered many a right-winger, who even when faced with the original story, and the reasons why it was never charged as a racist attack, will point to the CCTV, which funnily enough has no audio feedback, but quite clearly shows from the grainy pictures the blatant racism. Right-wing blogs globally have expressed their outrage.

Consequently, the EDL chose to march in Leicester, to protest against the two-tier justice system in place in the UK, which they cannot prove. What can be proved is that despite the severity of the attack, first time offenders, regardless of colour, will be usually be given suspended sentences, whilst their barristers point to the fact their client was pissed or on drugs at the time, no doubt saying it was a "one off" incident.
