Youth suffer extra-time defeat
Leicester City were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup last night as Wolves rallied to beat them 2-1 in extra-time at the Walkers Stadium.
City looked to have booked their place in the fourth round when forward Billy McKay gave them a second-half lead.
But the under-18s conceded an equaliser in second-half injury-time before Wolves snatched the tie in extra-time.
Academy manager Jon Rudkin said: "We are very disappointed for the boys. It's important they learn from it."
City started brightly and almost took the lead on five minutes when forward Eric Odhiambo diverted Joe Mattock's right-wing cross inches past the far post.
Midfielder Ryan Beswick then fizzed a shot narrowly wide and defender Scott Garner went close before Wolves midfielder Mark Salmon tested City keeper Carl Pentney with a well-struck drive.
With half-time approaching Odhiambo, who made his first-team debut in the Carling Cup defeat by Aston Villa, almost gave City the lead. The impressive youngster exchanged passes with strike partner McKay before firing a dipping drive on to the crossbar.
City midfielder Tom Tejan-Sie had the ball in the net early in the second-half but was called back for handball.
City's dominance was rewarded on 69 minutes when McKay latched on to Odhiambo's clever throughball for a clinical finish.
It sparked Wolves into life with forward Liam Hughes forcing two good saves from Pentney, while Beswick almost added a second at the other end.
City looked to be closing the tie out when Hughes rifled home from the edge of the area with the last kick of the game.
The forward then added his second on 108 minutes, capitalising on a defensive mistake to fire past Pentney and, despite some concerted late City pressure, send Wolves through.
