Some of you may have received an email to say that someone has had 5 failed login attempts to your account and has been blocked.
This is the result of an attempted attack on forums, coming from Russia. It is not targeted at this site in particular, and is not related to last week's attack by hackers.
A few days agp I blocked the range of IPs the attack was coming from, but they appear to have acquired some new IP addresses, which I have also blocked.
They are trying a brute force attack, by guessing passwords. Presumably if they manage to access an account they'll use it to post spam.
There should be no danger to anyone's account, as long as you're using a strong password. That means no dictionary words, and it's best to use a combination of letters and numbers. As they get blocked for 15 minutes after 5 failed attempts there's little danger of them accessing your account even if you have a weak password. But if you think your password may be vulnerable, please change it to something stronger.
