Windows Explorer on my Windows XP has become corrupted in some way. It works in safe mode but not in normal everyday more. I don't have a Windows disk, it wasn't provided when I bought the computer (which as an aside I think is a scandal, if I own the software I should own the disk and have the ability to fix it!)

Does anyone know
(a) whether you can reinstall or repair Windows Explorer without a Windows disk
(b) any other decent freeware file manager software programs to download?

I'm getting a new PC delivered soon anyway, but it would just be easier to have access to a file manager

Bear in mind when I had this exact problem a while back it turned out my computer was riddled with viruses, so if you are going to be copying any files from this PC to your new one I would make sure you scan them thoroughly

Edit: Also, if they don't provide a Windows disk there is generally a recovery partition on the hard drive that you can boot to and restore from.

OEM versions of Windows are usually pre-installed and you either get a recovery partition or a facility to burn off your own back-up discs.

Either way, under the OEM license if the computer dies then that 'copy' of Windows dies with it.

I'm not sure that you ever 'own' software even when purchased - you are merely buying a license to use it.

Have you ever tried Linux in one of its many flavours?
