A touch of nostalgia and yes this thread does belong in the Leicester City section.

I have just been to see Gerry and the Pacemakers at De Montfort Hall - part of the Mersey sound of the 1960s for those too young to know.

Just before he ended the show with "You'll Never Walk Alone" he said "This is the anthem of the greatest football team in the country." When this was greeted with predictable heckles he said "I know Leicester has a very good team - the Tigers. Pity they haven't got a football team."
No doubt he uses a variation of this wherever he performs. However, the follow up interested me "Actually Leicester used to be our bogey team. We could never beat them."

In fact, I vividly remember Shanklys Liverpool beating us a couple of times. However, I have come across this before from Liverpudlians; part of the legacy of a time when the great Kevin Keegan kept being thwarted by quite simply the best goalkeeper in the world.

We have twice beaten Liverpool at Anfield on three successive occasions. I believe we are the only club ever to have done this.

And there was that game in Jan -81 when we were bottom, they were top, and we ended their unbeaten run at Anfield of 85(?) games

I've seen City play 3 times at Anfield and have yet to see us lose. Not many grounds I can say that about :icon_bigg

* Old person alert * I was there ( a fresh-faced youngster, obviously ). The Liverpool bus drivers took it well, the buses back to the station didn't appear. What followed was the longest Police escort ( in time terms ) that I can remember. If memory serves me right we scored all three goals ( theirs was an own goal ), and all were in front of the Kop.

The first time I met you Bob was at Anfield. Remember? It was an evening game and Ian Marshall got our winner in front of their Kop :icon_bigg

Brilliant trip back that night!

Was that when Anfield had renovations going on and *technically* there were no away fans?

It was and I was there, Matty Elliott and Fenton scored. It got a little tense around us in the kop when we scored the winner.

Phil Gilchrist scored there too, my dad met him once at a charity golfing thing and naturally he said it was by far the highlight of his career.

Blimey! Your dad must be ****ing good at golf if he impressed him that much

I was there in the Main Stand too. There were quite a few City fans there for a game that had supposedly no away fans.

Just as there was at Millwall a few years later.

Not brave enough for the Kop? :icon_bigg

The only cheers for our goals came from the main stand if I remember, those of us sat in the Kop were trying to go unnoticed.

I went to this game with my Mrs, although not married in those days, and we travelled over from Manchester where we were staying for the weekend with friends. We parked in a residential area about a mile from the ground and having heard the rumours we were pleased to see the car in one piece and still there when we got back to it.

That weekend to Manchester was much more sucessfull than a previous one earlier that season when we visited Old Trafford together. I think it was after the 4th goal that the guy sitting next to us asked " are you Leicester fans?". My Mrs is a ManU fan and had kept her seat as the goals went in out of courtesy for me I suppose but such a defeat was a real wakeup as to what Division 1 held for us that solitary season in the top flight, defeat to Forest by the same score was even worse.

Hopefully we can be visiting Liverpool and ManU again next season.:icon_wink

:081: Not brave enough for the Kop no.

Did cheer though when we scored (once I realised I wasn't the only City fan there) :icon_bigg

I originally came across this at a conference in Liverpool when a Liverpool architect asked me if I supported Leicester. The match that impressed him was the incredibly one-sided 0-0 draw in the semi-final at Old Trafford which we had both attended.

Shankley's team was in superb form and our back four could not cope with Keegan at his best. It may be a false memory but I have the idea that when Shilton ran toward the Kop at the start of the second half they applauded him. Certainly as the game went on I almost felt there was nothing Liverpool could do that day that could get past Shilton. It had to be incredibly frustrating for the Liverpool fans but they did beat us a few days later in the replay at Villa Park.

I was at Old Trafford that day too. I had the flu and passed out and had to be carried down the front!

The Anfield win i remember most was in 69, 1-0 Rodney Fern (?) and Shilton saved a Roger Hunt penalty. Didn't go but listened to the second half commentary on Radio 2 as it was in thse days. Never known a longer 45 minutes - an eternity for a 12 year old.
