OK, bit of nostalgia here. Whenever City score Radio Leicester plays a horn, this has even been incorporated into the Walkers goal music.

Now I don’t know about anyone else but that noise makes my hairs stand on end. I mean when have we heard that noise and been disappointed? Never! It takes me back to all the many nights when everything that was going on in the house was put on hold for 90minutes (a tradition I have carried on since moving out of the rents).

I was wondering, where the sound originates from? Does it have any relation to the post horn gallop? :102:

no relation to the post horn gallop at all. I remember when we beat cambridge 5-0 in the 2nd leg play off semi and it was played over and over. It was brilliant. I want that as my text message alert.

What if you get confused and think Leicester have scored?

You mean this ...

Goal Horn

Joe ... it's an MP3 so you can download it to your phone as the text alert.

can't get it to work its says

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

Try downloading it again as it works fine for me.

Try using a decent media player, WMP is a pile of festering dog carcasses.

I've already got the goal horn as my text alert and the Post Horn Gallop as my ringtone for City fans.

The sound comes from a BBC sound effects record from the early 80's. At that time no live commentary was allowed, so the sports programme had music, various sports interviews & some reports taken from national sports coverage.

This meant a number of listeners weren't glued to the radio, so the sports team at Radio Leicester at that time, including me, thought it was a good idea to have a sound which could be played over anything currently being broadcast, which would then be interuppted to go live to the ground for a 30 second report on the goal.

A guy called Danny Cox (who still works in Radio) spent hours going through sound effect records, narrowed it down to a shortlist, we then both narrowed it down to 3 sound effects & then the entire team made the final choice.

And it's been used ever since (except for a small break around 3 years ago, when so many listeners complained about it being dropped, that it was soon re-instated), which also alerted LCFC as to how fans related to it & therefore being added to the tannoy at the ground.

... well you did ask

Fascinating! It's good, and unusual, to get such a response from somebody who clearly is in a position to know the answer.

I thought it was something like that as I remember the goal horn when listening to RL years ago from afar before they did commentary.
By the way Isopen was Lee McCarthy part of the decision team?

I think it was prior to Lee/Liam presenting, can't remember exactly.

When I started it was Dennis Coath (with ITV Cental for many years) & then Steve May (been at Five Live for years now) before Lee than took over.

Think it was probably while Steve was presenting, but Foxpodder on here could confirm for sure if it was in Liam's time that the selection was made.
