Because at one point the local Hyper Value had a job lot in selling at £4.99 a pair. On reflection though, Winfield (Woolworths own brand) were the worst quality-wise.

So, just to summarise the thread for Ollie, people don't like Gola because of price point snobbery and because historically they haven't been marketed as successfully as other, possibly inferior, brands.
