Went to finish some work i was doing on my computer earlier and i got a windows startup error message with two options restore settings and start settings normally. Both options if pressed went back to same screen, in a loop.

Nothing worked, took it to a shop and the chap said he could sort it, come back in an hour. I did and it restored factory settings and lost all my pictures from family outings and holidays and 3 5,000 word essays i had prepared for my post-grad course.

Out of interest in future if it happens again, what could i do?

You could restore all your data from your backup.

Had a similar problem and basically had to use the original Windows XP disc to reinstall everything, the alternative was to lose all data.

My brothers laptop did this exact same thing a few weeks back. He had no backups so I got him a USB caddy for a laptop drive, took the drive out and in to the caddy then got all his music, work etc off on to my PC for him.

An easier way is to just boot the laptop, or PC, from a CD then you can copy all of the files off the hard drive before reinstalling Windows.

I'm amazed that the fella in the shop that you went to didn't have the cop on to do that before destroying all of your files Scarbs. What a feckin idiot, I'd be throwing f*cks at him if I were you.

apparently the CD back up didnt work either.

Then he obviously didn't know what he was doing.
If he was able to restore Windows onto the same hard drive then it is obviously functioning okay, so there is no reason why he wouldn't have been able to copy all of your files from it before restoring Windows.

He said the CD wouldnt work so he had to press Alt and F10 or something:102:

At a guess, I'd say he was trying to repair your Windows installation & ended up just reinstalling it.
He obviously hasn't even tried to save any of your files.

You mean to boot the machine from a Linux CD? Tried that but Vista seems to protect the files in the 'My Documents' folder and my copy of Mint just couldnt get at them.

You can use a Linux CD, but it needs to have NTFS support built in, which I don't think Mint has.

You can get Windows boot CDs, here and here. I keep one handy for exactly this reason and has saved the day many a time with friends who've been downloading too much porn & have bricked their PC like Scarby did. :icon_wink

:icon_bigg Mint would read everything apart from the My Docs folder. To be fair even my my Vista PC when reading that folder took about 8 or 9 minutes to access it.
