Re: News of those we once loved (and Melton hated)

Geoff Horsfield has had to retire after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. Get well soon Geoffrey!

Oh dear. I echo your sentiments.

Former Fulham, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed he is suffering from testicular cancer.

The 34-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United last summer and hoping to earn a contract at Walsall, has been forced to retire as a result and will undergo surgery next week.

Horsfield told the Daily Mirror: "I found a small lump in my left testicle and went to see the doctor at West Brom, who's a good friend of mine.

"I was diagnosed last Friday and I'm going in for surgery next Thursday. The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, which is disappointing.

"But I've had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I've played for and enjoyed it.

"That's at the back of my mind now. It's just one of those things and I've come to terms with my career being over.

"All I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win."

Horsfield has been told he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early.

He added: "The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small," he said. "He says I stand a good chance of making a full recovery because we've got in early."

Re: News of those we once loved (and Melton hated)

Well he certainly didn't bust a nut trying hard for us :)

His goals against the scum were more than enough return from him.

yeah......get well geoff!
I hope he beats it and the operation is a success.
maybe, in the future he may not have to hang his boots up....we'll see, good luck!

hope he gets well soon, though that has **** all to do with him having played for city

Never nice to hear.....Well done for spotting it GH and please that you have a full recovery.

Wow, what's with all the hostility guys, it was just a joke...

not a very sensative one. Look around your relations and find the one with cancer and poke fun at them.

Best wishes to Geoff

The medical profession say it is "one of the best cancers to have", as it is actually outside the main body, so if caught early with no spreading than it is a high 90% survival rate.

I should know, I had it in both of mine & I'm still here to tell the tale 11 years later.

Even managed to time my operations over the summer so I didn't miss a home game. altho it was a wierd day, diagnosis confirmed first thing Saturday morning, at Filbo to watch Man Utd for a lunchtime kick off.

I don't wish any harm on Horsfield, and i hope he gets well soon, but i have to echo london's sentiments of what he said just being a joke. I wouldn't say anything like that myself, but humour is a way of overcoming shocking news or when you hear bad things about people. Sometimes people can be a little too over-sensative about these things, he obviously didn't mean any harm on Horsfield.

Thanks M!key, sorry if I offended anyone.

I wish Geoff all the best. We went through the same thing with the much publicised Neil Harris campaign a few years back. Hopefully Geoff will make a full recovery in much the same way Neil has.
